A US Navy plane has landed in water in Hawaii after overrunning the runway at a military base.
A P-8A Poseidon crashed Monday into Kaneohe Bay off the Hawaiian island of O’ahu with nine people on board after missing its intended landing at a Marine Corps base in Hawaii, authorities confirmed, citing the Associated Press.
The incident occurred around 1:57 p.m. local time during “routine training” with the crew, military officials told local newspaper Hawaii News Now. Nine passengers were rescued and found to be uninjured upon landing after returning to shore, the source said.

A Boeing 737 passenger plane was seen in photos and clips circulating online partially submerged in shallow waters after a crash landing.
It is believed that the incident may have occurred due to fog and windy weather conditions in the area, but the official reason for the crash landing has not been confirmed.
“The pilot probably didn’t land the plane exactly on the runway where he wanted,” aviation expert Peter Forman told Hawaii News Now. He explained that Kaneohe’s runway is also shorter than most runways, adding another possible reason for the landing.
“It’s probably a combination of all those factors together,” Forman said.

According to Thomas Vaughan, who is a Honolulu meteorologist, visibility in the area was reduced to about one mile at the time of the incident, the AP reported.
Eyewitness Diane Dircks of Illinois, who was on a family outing at the time of the accident, told the AP: “We ran to the end of the pier and I took a few pictures. It was amazing.”
The crew on the downed aircraft were “with a maritime homeland defense support detachment,” Navy Lt. Mohammad Issa told NBC News.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
