Uber Driver's Extensive List of Car Rules Divides Opinions: ‘Gonna Be at My Destination Before I Finish Reading It’

An Uber user found a long list of rules for backseat passengers during a recent ride — and it divided people.

The driver shared a photo of the rules on Reddit on Jan. 9 and captioned the post, “List of rules for my Uber driver’s passengers.” The photo showed a laminated set of printed rules affixed to the back of the front seats.

The policy began: “Pets are always welcome, they must be on your lap or on the floor at all times to avoid pet hair for the next passenger. Do your best to clean up after your pet to avoid cleaning fees.”

“Have children sit in a safe place at all times, without banging the seat or playing with doors/windows to avoid tickets,” the rules continue. “Put your headphones on if you’re taking a call, I don’t want to hear phone conversations on speakerphone.” This goes for social media scrolling and everything else.”

The bulleted list added: “I will not turn off or mute the radio for your personal or business calls, I do not want to hear your corporate meetings or personal business deals. Have them before getting in or out of my car. There are no exceptions. Don’t ask me.”

“Don’t eat or drink in my car. The water is fine. If you do this and a mess or smell remains, it will be reported to Uber/Lyft and they will charge a $50 cleaning fee. No matter how small. The same applies to children,” wrote the driver. “No use of cigarettes/smoking at any time.”

“Cover your nose/mouth when you cough or sneeze. If I notice it doesn’t, it will be reported as a security issue!! This also applies to children. Wear a mask if you are sick,” read another rule, while the next read: “Wearing your seatbelt is up to you. However, you could potentially receive a fine.”

The driver concluded the list by saying, “If at any time you are not enjoying the ride, refuse to follow my rules or feel uncomfortable in any way […] I will be happy to stop so you can request another driver. Ask me now. Thank you for following these simple rules of behavior in the car. Let’s enjoy a pleasant safe ride to your destination.”

The post has received more than 1,300 responses since Jan. 10, with commenters divided on whether the rules are reasonable or excessive.

“I’ll be at my destination before I finish reading,” wrote one Redditor.

“Call or not, if the person I’m paying for is playing music that’s too loud or that I just don’t like, I’m going to ask them to turn it off. When you are a service provider, you need to be safe [accommodations] for your customers, and that should include driving quietly if necessary,” added another.

However, other commenters are suspicious of the driver – especially based on dishonest passengers they may have encountered in the past.

“He seems to be a generally good driver who is tired [of people] who have no manners or social etiquette. He’s even sad [needs] posting ‘rules’ that are common decency,” wrote another.

Others noted that many of the rules made sense in theory, but took issue with the tone of the message.

“I agree that it’s mostly decent stuff, but the tone and length of it (and the unwillingness to adjust his radio) deserves a one-star rating. The tone reads like ‘come in, sit down, shut up, and fuck you’. ” one person wrote.

“If this guy is going to have rules, we need to see them before we’re already committed and in the car. People can say they agree with that, but it’s lame to throw rules after the transaction is literally already in progress when he accepted the passenger’s request on the app,” wrote another.
