Uddhav Thackeray

Uddhav Thackeray is an Indian politician and the 19th Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He is the son of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

Uddhav Thackeray was born on Wednesday, July 26, 1960, in Mumbai, Maharashtra (64 years; as of 2024). His zodiac sign is Leo. He was educated at Balmohan Vidya Mandir School in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He graduated from Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy College of Arts, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Uddhav was not interested in politics at all and wanted to do something in another field. He began taking professional photography and was also a writer. Uddhav also founded an advertising agency called ‘Chowrang’. However, the institution was not successful and had to close soon after.

Uddhav Thackeray belongs to the Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu caste (CKP). His father Bal Thackeray was a famous politician and founder of the Shiv Sena. His mother Meena Thackeray was a housewife. He had two elder brothers, Bindumadhav Thackeray (businessman and film producer), who died in a road accident on April 20, 1996, and Jaidev Thackeray, who died in a road accident on April 20, 1996. His cousin Raj Thackeray was a politician and founder of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

Uddhav met his wife Rashmi Thackeray (a businesswoman and member of the Shiv Sena women’s wing) during college and fell in love with her. They dated for a while and got married on December 13, 1988. They have two sons: Aditya Thackeray (politician) and Tejas Thackeray (wildlife researcher).

Profession

When Uddhav joined the Shiv Sena as a member, not many people knew about him. Because he keeps a low profile. He has served in various capacities in the Shiv Sena from the grassroots to the state level. In 2002, Bal Thackeray handed him the responsibility of monitoring the 2002 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. He came into limelight when the Shiv Sena performed well in the BMC elections under Uddhav.

In 2003, Uddhav was appointed working president of the Shiv Sena. In 2013, after the death of Bal Thackeray, he was elected as the Shiv Sena chief. In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Shiv Sena campaigned as an ally with the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, when the results were announced, Uddhav demanded equal seats and power-sharing in the chief ministerial post. He wants the Shiv Sena member to serve as chief minister for two-and-a-half years. The BJP said there was no agreement on such issues before the elections and they would not comply now.

Eventually, Uddhav formed an alliance with Sharad Pawar and Sonia Gandhi to form the government in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress have named their alliance ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’. Uddhav was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra at Shivaji Park in Mumbai at 6:40 pm on November 28, 2019.

On June 29, 2022, he submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to the Governor of Maharashtra; the resignation was preceded by a vote of no confidence.

  • On October 24, 2011, Uddhav threatened Sanjay Nirupam, saying that he would break his teeth if he created any disturbance in Mumbai. Addressing a rally, Nirupam targeted Uddhav and Raj Thackeray and said: “North Indians can bring Mumbai to a standstill if they want to.”
  • On October 1, 2016, Uddhav had to publicly apologize for the cartoons published in the 25th edition of Saamana and Dopahar ka Saamana. The cartoon reportedly mocked the Marathi community and Uddhav, who is the editor-in-chief of Saamana, had to apologize unconditionally after facing strong backlash from the Marathi community.
  • Rahul Shewale of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) filed a defamation suit against Uddhav and Sanjay Raut after Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana published an article that allegedly defamed him. Both were later released on bail on a cash bond of Rs. 15,000. The court fined them Rs. In 2000, they delayed submitting revisions by 84 days. In July 2024, Thackeray and Raut requested the special court to give them two more days to pay Rs. 2000 fine. However, Schewel’s defenders asked the court to reject their application.
