After listeners said he sounded different on air, British radio host Jamie Theakston sought medical attention – and discovered he had throat cancer.
“As you know – I recently had an operation to remove a lesion on my vocal cords. A biopsy identified this as stage 1 laryngeal cancer,” Theakston shared in a September 17 Instagram post.
It was a follow-up to his post on September 1, where Theakston, 53, wrote: “Sooo, a few of you listeners have noticed my voice not sounding right over the past few weeks – I have to thank you… checked out — Doctors have found a lesion on my vocal cords that I removed this weekend.”

Theakston, who shares two children with his wife, jewelery designer Sophie Theakston, announced he would be taking a leave of absence from the long-running Heart Radio breakfast show, which he has co-hosted since 2005. His current co-host, Britain has talent judge Amanda Holden, will continue the show with deejay JK stepping in for Theakston.
“I hope to be back with you in October. Until then, I’ve been told to give my voice a rest,” Theakston wrote, cheekily adding that the show is “in the mostly capable hands of Amanda and JK.”
They talked about his illness on air, and Holden said “even though it’s been identified as cancer, it’s not all bad news.”
