UK weather: Snow blankets parts of Britain sparking carnage for drivers as -3C Arctic chill hits & health alerts issued

SNOW has blanketed parts of Britain, causing a carnage of motorists amid -3C arctic cold and health warnings.

Much of the UK will be hit by “disruptive snow”, ice and high temperatures this week.

More than 20cm of snow could accumulate in some areas – giving the country its “first taste of winter”.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice will be in effect today.

Forecasters said there was “potential” for an “escalation” of the yellow warnings.

One warning comes into effect at 7pm and will affect the East Midlands, Yorkshire, Wales and the north of England overnight.

There is a possibility of power outages, disruptions in road and public transport, and the risk of injuries from slipping on ice.

Another snow and ice warning hit the far north of Scotland until 11am.

The UK’s Health Safety Agency has also issued a cold weather warning covering much of England until Thursday.

It came after the mercury dropped to -3.3C in the Scottish Highlands last night.

Met Office expert Tom Morgan: “We could see some disruptive snow across the Pennine regions, particularly the Peak District, particularly on Monday night.

“But we could see some impacts lasting through the morning rush hour on Tuesday.

“Even down to the lower levels, we could see some snow, so quite a bit of disruption is possible by Tuesday morning.

“The week ahead is likely to remain cold across the country, with a windy day tomorrow and then wintry showers through the week ahead.

“What we can say is that it will be very cold for this time of year.

At night there will be heavy frost, and in some places snow on the ground.

The daily high for the week ahead is forecast to be around 5C – well below the average high for this time of year.

Some parts of Scotland will reach “just above freezing”, Mr Morgan added.

Changes in weather warnings are “likely” to occur in the coming days.

Some “wintry winds” could be seen in the south of England later this week.

Despite the cold conditions, “the whole of Great Britain” will enjoy more sunshine this week.

The forecaster said: “There will be snow showers on the outskirts of the UK, particularly in northern Scotland, and down the east and west coasts.

“But if you live inland and you live in the south, there will be a lot of sparkling blue skies most days Tuesday through Friday.”
