Soon after graduating around 1993, Uma applied for an anchor position with Tamil entertainment channel SUN TV. When she first started working as a newscaster at SUN TV, the channel was just six months old. Eventually, Padmanabhan started hosting the Tamil morning show “Vanakkam Tamizhagam” which later became one of the highest-rated morning shows in Tamil Nadu and completed 1000 episodes while Uma was still there. In an interview, when Uma was asked about her experience on the channel, she said:
News reading and calculation are unique among all genres. This happened in the early days after Doordarshan when the private channel Sun TV was at the forefront. I joined there six months after the channel was launched. Now you can’t read news by looking at sample prompts. You have to write, read and look at the camera. There are a lot of challenges in the calculation field too.”
During her tenure at SUN TV, Uma hosted almost all the shows of the channel. Apart from this, the TV host has also worked with Vijay TV, Jaya TV and other Tamil channels.
