After completing his school education, he studied engineering course at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (now COMSATS University), Islamabad. But later he felt that it was not interesting, so after studying for two semesters, he transferred to BBA. He also studied at Indus Group of Colleges, Rawalpindi. Later, he moved to Karachi to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.

Umer Aalam started acting in theater while studying in college. He has acted in Anwar Maqsood’s play “Siachen” and received huge praise from the audience. In 2015, he started working with a theater company called KopyKats Productions in Islamabad, Pakistan. Later he worked in the theater companies of “Theater Volley” and “Blind Bachelor Production”.

- He has been passionate about acting since he was a child.
- He revealed in an interview that when he started to enter the entertainment industry, his mentor suggested that he change his name. He said he added his grandfather’s name “Aalam” as a suffix to his name and changed his name from “Umer Iqbal” to “Umer Aalam” in 2020.

Before Tamasha, I would go out somewhere and people would push each other and whisper that I seemed like an actor. Now, they know me as Tamasha winner Umer Alam and not as brother of hero or friend of hero. Tamasha helped me through three or four years of struggle to get myself recognized. “
