Upendra Kushwaha is an Indian politician and former Minister of State for Human Resources and Development (2014-2018). He is also a former member of Congress. He became a member of the Bihar Legislative Council in 2010. On March 3, 2013, he formed his own political party “Rashtriya Lok Samata Party”.

In 2007, he was expelled from the Janata Dal (Manchester United) for allegedly engaging in “anti-party” activities. In February 2009, he founded his own political party, the Rashtriya Samata Party. In November 2009, following the rapprochement between Upendra Kushwaha and Janata Party leader Nitish Kumar, the Janata Party merged with the Janata Party. In 2020, Kushwaha announced the formation of a Third Front in partnership with the Bahujan Samaj Party ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, which would contest all 243 seats with the other three political fronts, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) , the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (INC) is contesting all 243 seats. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is another alliance made up of various smaller parties led by the Jan Adhikar Party.

Ahead of the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, the RLSP once again merged with the JD(U), following which Kushwaha was appointed president of the JD(U) state parliamentary committee in 2021.

In 2010, he became a member of the Bundestag and served as a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture from August 2010 to January 2013. In 2013, he resigned from the United People’s Party. On March 3, 2013, he launched another political party and named it Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP).

During the formation of the RLSP, Kushwaha announced that the party would try to overthrow the National Democratic Alliance in Bihar; however, the Janata Dal (United) left the alliance and the RLSP joined the National Democratic Alliance. In 2014, he contested and won the 16th Lok Sabha election from Karakot constituency as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. On May 26, 2014, Upendra Kushwaha was sworn in as Minister of State at a swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Palace in New Delhi in the presence of then Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.

He was subsequently appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resource Development and later in the Ministry of Rural Development; under the Panchayati Raj Ministry and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. In December 2018, he resigned as a minister and withdrew from the National Democratic Alliance. In 2019, RLSP fled the NDA alliance. Kushwaha has joined the Indian National Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Front, which includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Hindustan Awam Morcha Party and Vikas Sher Insaan Party. In 2019, he participated in the 17th Lok Sabha election in the name of the Indian National Congress, and participated in the elections in Karakot and Ujiyarpur constituencies. Upendra lost the Karakot Lok Sabha constituency to Mahabali Singh of the United BJP by 84,542 votes and the Ujjalpur Lok Sabha constituency to the BJP’s Nitti by 2,77,278 votes Anand Rai.

An altercation with Nitish Kumar
In January 2023, Upendra Kushwaha filed a lawsuit against Nitish Kumar for making derogatory remarks against him when he was appointed as JD(U) parliamentary committee chairman and Accused him of ignoring his advice while in the role. When the altercation between Upendra and Nitish hit the news, some protesters pelted stones at Upendra Kushwaha’s car. According to reports, some people were standing near Upendra Kushwaha’s car holding black flags after Kushwaha reached Ara from Buxhalin Bihar on January 30, 2023. During this time, an altercation broke out between the protesters and Upendra’s supporters, with the protesters pelting stones at Kushwaha’s car. Following this, Kushwaha Samaj workers beat up the protesters. Later, he posted this tweet on his social media,

Talking about the incident in an interview, Kushwaha said,
Some of the stone-throwers covered their faces with scarves, while others did not. I will tell these people everything in due course. “
Following this, on January 31, 2023, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced his deputy and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as the candidate for the 2025 state elections. successor and urged Kushwaha to oppose Nitish Kumar. In an interview on January 31, 2023, Upendra, who was at loggerheads with Nitish Kumar, lashed out at him and said:
When I was appointed chairman of a parliamentary committee, I was treated with great respect. But this is a kind of “jhunjhuna”. Even after chairing a parliamentary committee, I was unable to nominate members. My suggestions were not taken seriously. ”
“Blood will flow in the streets”
After the defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kushwaha issued a controversial statement in which he warned the NDA leadership that there would be bloodshed on the streets if the election results deteriorated; but after receiving a notice from the Election Commission , he clarified that his intention was not to provoke violence.

- During his graduation, Upendra learned political secrets from Jayaprakash Narayan and Karpoori Thakur, close friends of Upendra’s father. Two-time Bihar Chief Minister Kapri Thakur guided him at his residence in Upandra.
- When Upendra joined the Lok Dal youth team in 1985, he was a junior of Janata Dal (United) co-founder Nitish Kumar. Upendra was fascinated by Kumar and so on his advice he added Kushwaha to his name as, according to Kumar, the name would help enhance his political status.
