Upendra Limaye is an Indian actor, known for his role as Tayappa in the Marathi film Jogwa (2009). He has been working in the film industry for more than two decades starting in 1994 and has acted in 25 films in Marathi, Hindi and Tamil films.

Upendra Limaye was born on Saturday, November 8, 1969 in Sadashiv Peth, Pune (age 54; as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He studied at New English High School, Tilak Road, Pune and Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune. Later, he pursued acting courses at Lalit Kala Kendra, a performing arts center in New Delhi. He was the first family member to pursue a career as an actor on stage, television and screen. Growing up, he experienced a combination of traditional values and a more open attitude. His father’s family adhered to traditional customs, while his mother’s family embraced openness and liberalism. He once found extracurricular activities more engaging than academic ones. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a cricketer, but his parents preferred him to play kabaddi. Eventually, he understood that the family’s financial situation was the real obstacle. His passion for theater began with social party plays at school. After completing class 12, he told his parents that he wanted to join Lalit Kala Kendra and pursue an acting career. He took up acting as his main profession at Lalit Kala Kendra in Pune. To earn money, he started working at Alurkar Music House in Pune. After completing his studies at Lalit Kala Kendra, he established an experimental theater platform called ‘Parichay’ along with his friends Sanjay Pawar, Subodh Pande and Abhay Godse.

Profession
For five years starting in 1990, he performed in many Grips Theater plays. He said in an interview that the experience was very rewarding. In these dramas, actors in their 30s play 8 or 9-year-old children, who have a difficult task. This process helps develop mental and physical flexibility. Furthermore, it also led him to take on more demanding roles. In 1999, after ten years with the group “Parichay”, he came to Mumbai to star in a mainstream commercial drama called “Dr Aap Bhi”. During this period, he met Sachin Khedekar who was actively participating in various TV series. This encounter with Sachin Khedekar brought about a positive change and paved the way for further growth in his career. He also explored Marathi television in the early 2000s. Although he received offers for Hindi shows, it was not in line with the dream he wanted to pursue. He collaborated with Vinay Apte and later through Vinay Apte’s relationship, he got his first opportunity in Bollywood from Madhur Bhandarkar in 2002. This is a small role in the movie “Chandani Bar”. At the same time, he continued to appear in TV series in supporting roles. However, the turning point came in 2004 when Madhur Bhandarkar offered him the important role of Inspector Bhosale in a film. While appearing as a guest on The Kapil Sharma Show in 2019, he mentioned that the 2001 Hindi film Chandni Bar was his first commercially successful film.

In 1994, Upendra made his acting debut with the film Mukta, playing the role of a social activist. He appeared in several Marathi films including Sarkarnama (1998) as a contractor/decorator, Blind Game (2006) as Karamchand, Urus (2008) as Mahadev, Tuhya Dharma Koncha? (2013) as Kawadu and Jagu Ani Juliet (2023). In 2023, he was seen in the Bollywood film Animals starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Tripti Demri Play as Freddy.
television
Upendra made his television debut as Sachin Mane in Sony TV’s drama Tara From Satara (2019-2020). In 2022, he appeared in the Marathi TV series “Mi Punha Yein” and in 2023, he was a part of the show “Gemadpanthi”. He plays the role of Sandeep Shinde in Disney Hotstar’s TV series “Criminal Justice: Adulla Sah”.

I prefer roles that challenge me as an actor. I think as an artist, a character has two aspects. One is the external value, which is clothing and styling. These are the responsibility of the creative department. And then there’s the inner personality, which is what I love the most. I love experimenting with roles and getting the body language right. I try to bring in as much authenticity as possible. We had Kathak experts on the set who could help me get the layers right. “
