In 1985, Usha Sharma became an IAS officer and was posted in the Rajasthan cadre. In 1989, she served as Divisional Officer of Alwar, Rajasthan and later as Administrator of Alwar District Municipal Council. On January 1, 1994, she became the Collector cum Magistrate of Bundi District. In October 1999, she became the Collector and District Magistrate of Ajmer district. In 2003, she became the Commissioner, Jaipur Development Authority. Over the next few years, she gained work experience in various departments including the Ministry of Project Implementation, Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, Spinfed & Rajasthan Handloom Development, Ministry of Industries, and Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. In 2012, she was appointed Deputy Director, Tourism, Government of India. In 2015, she was appointed as Additional Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances.
In 2017, she replaced Rakesh Tewari as Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) until 2020. In 2020, she was appointed Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs.
In 2022, she surpassed Niranjan Arya to become the chief secretary of Rajasthan. Apart from this, she has the additional responsibility of Rajasthan Mining and Minerals Limited, Udaipur.
Facts/Trivia
- Usha Sharma was appointed Chief Secretary of Rajasthan, becoming the 46th person to hold the post; she also became the second woman official to hold the top bureaucratic post in Rajasthan. Before her, Kushal Singh was appointed as the state chief secretary in the Ashok Gehlot government in 2009.
- During her tenure as director of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the ASI purchased a new headquarters building called Dharohar Bhawan with facilities such as energy-efficient lighting and rainwater harvesting. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.
- On the request of the Rajasthan government, the central government has extended the tenure of Usha Sharma as chief secretary of Rajasthan by six months. She will retain her position as Chief Secretary until December 2023.
