Usher Celebrates 20th Anniversary of ‘Masterpiece’ Confessions, Thanks Fans for ‘Rocking with Me Through Every Lyric’

It’s been two decades since Usher came clean.

The cult R&B singer (45) released his album Confessions 20 years ago on Saturday, and he is marking the occasion by thanking his fans for their continued support.

Along with a compilation of music videos for some of the album’s iconic tracks, Usher wrote: “20 years ago today, we released the iconic album ‘Confessions,’ which is now 14 times platinum. Making it the highest RIAA-certified male solo album released in this century. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾.”

Usher, who most recently headlined the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show in February, continued, “The love and support from my early days has been incredible. Thank you for following me through every verse, every beat, and every confession. Thank you to every important collaborator who was part of this very special project that helped shape and form my career as an artist. Without you, Confessions would not be the masterpiece it is.”

Usher concluded his post with a toast and a promise for the future: “For the memories, the vibes, and the timeless music that continues to move us. Let’s keep making history!!”

Usher honors the women in his life as he accepts the President’s Award at the 2024 NAACP Image Awards.

The singer will soon embark on his USHER: Past Present Future tour, which kicks off in August. The tour will feature music from across his 30-year career, including hits from his 1994 debut album. Usher, and of course including songs from 2004 Confessions.

Usher spoke candidly about Confessions in his PEOPLE cover story in February, revealing that “there’s a lot of truth to that album.”

As for sharing his own truth through music, Usher said he was inspired by a conversation he had with publicist Chris Chambers at the time. “He motivated me to think about who I am and what people know about me. And the result was Confessions,” he said. Before that conversation, “I always felt like I was going to be judged for being vulnerable. Black man, we’ll handle it.”
