Valerie Bertinelli Posts a Swimsuit Selfie to Mark the 'Last Dog Day of Summer'

Valerie Bertinelli is all smiles and in swimsuits.

The Let yourself go author, 64, shared a poolside selfie on Instagram to talk about her excitement for the end of summer.

“11. August. The last dog day of summer. “I spent 64 years not knowing what it really meant, so I looked it up,” Bertinelli wrote in the caption.

Her research revealed that dog days are the 40 days around the rising star constellation Sirius (known as the dog star). “The dog days of summer are 20 days before and 20 days after Sirius becomes visible in the east when the sky is still dark just before sunrise,” Bertinelli said.

“And it’s hot k…”, she added. “Anyway, this is me patiently waiting for the autumnal equinox. 😜”

Despite her disdain for summer, Valerie’s Home Cooking The alum looked happy on her towel while wearing a polka dot swimsuit, straw hat, tortoiseshell glasses and a flashy Apple Watch.

Bertinelli recently marked an exciting occasion: six months without alcohol.

The celebrity chef announced the milestone on her Instagram on July 1. Plus, she opened up to PEOPLE about how her life has changed since getting sober.

“Even with life’s struggles and how challenging life can be, I find it’s easier to figure out what I need to do faster and take care of my life,” she told PEOPLE in July. “I feel good when I wake up in the morning. I’m not groggy. I’m not tired. I’m not, ‘What did I do last night?'”

In her April cover story for PEOPLE, Bertinelli said she cut back on alcohol because she “doesn’t need anything to boost my happiness right now.”

“I feel excited just by life,” she said at the time. “The other day I went to dinner with a friend and I had ginger beer in a glass of wine. And it felt like I was celebrating.”
