Valerie Bertinelli's Boyfriend Says She Cared for Him During an ‘Excruciating’ Time While They Were Newly Dating

Valerie Bertinelli’s boyfriend Mike Goodnough is open about how she supports him.

Goodnough, who goes by the name Hoarse Whisperer on social media, shared a touching story from the beginning of their relationship. In an Instagram post, the East Coast writer described how his childhood friend was “nearing the end of his life” in March, so Goodnough flew to Los Angeles to be near him.

“At that point @wolfiesmom and I had only been together a few months. However, she knew how exhausted I was and told me I could stay with her,” he wrote. Bertinelli even canceled “family plans that were important to her … to me,” he added.

“Every night that week, when I returned from supporting my friend and his grieving mother and family, she made sure I ate. The first night she made me a sandwich,” Goodnough wrote. “I will turn 54 in a few days. I don’t think I remember a sandwich in my life as vividly as I remember that one… how it made me feel, the care in it, the love.”

Goodnough explained that the week was “excruciating” but “healing,” and credits Bertinelli with the reason he feels that way.

Valerie Bertinelli and Mike Goodnough began dating in January.

“It helped me find peace from long-grieving losses. Valerie’s support was the reason for that. She didn’t owe me anything. She offered it,” he said. “There are people who show you care and people who just tell you so [they] make.”

He suggested giving “space to the latter”.

“Exes — the people who are there for you — are life’s richest blessing. Take care of them, because they are treasures,” he wrote.

Early on in their bicoastal relationship, the couple made it a rule to see each other every three weeks. “It never goes longer than we don’t see each other,” Bertinelli told PEOPLE in April.

Four months later, she had heartbreaking news.

“It was challenging,” she said in July. “The summer is full. It’s challenging.”
