Tom Schwartz opens up about his younger brother Robert “Bert” Schwartz’s struggle with alcohol addiction.
On Tuesday in the episode Vanderpump Rules, the 41-year-old tells Lisa Vanderpump he got “really bad news” about Bert, saying his brother had to be rushed to the hospital from rehab. He also thinks Bert might have cirrhosis.
Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver is damaged and permanently damaged, according to the National Institutes of Health. Scar tissue replaces healthy tissue and eventually prevents the liver from working properly. One of the causes of cirrhosis is long-term alcohol abuse.
Schwartz said Bert was “this ray of sunshine” until he developed an “alcohol addiction.” He admitted that the fear for his health made him think about his own alcohol consumption and reconsider the way he drinks, striving for “moderation”.
Later in the show, Schwartz told Lala Kent — who celebrated five years of sobriety in October — that he’s been “sober curious” lately and even brought a soft drink. However, Kent was skeptical and wondered what the term meant.

Back in 2018, Schwartz addressed his drinking habits during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. During the show, a fan called and asked the reality star if he would “slow down on your drinking.”
“Without a doubt,” Schwartz replied as Cohen shared his skepticism because he is known for often being drunk on the show.
