“She asked when I returned to work, and I said, ‘At the end of June.’ She says, ‘But your anniversary is July 13th. She says, ‘And that’s your lucky number, that’s your golden anniversary.’ I said, ‘I know, baby.’ She said, ‘Well, you have to be with Daddy. You have to do something,’ recalls Vanessa, who has sons Camden (11) and Phoenix (7) with Nick (50).

“She’s very aware when mom and dad are holding hands and loving, and she’s very aware when there’s tension in the room,” Vanessa explains.
The actress and TV host says Brooklyn’s worries about her parents’ anniversary plans made her think about her own childhood and not having a mother around.
“I remember being her age and I just remember everything going on when my mom left me. My mom left me when I was her age. And we talk about it all the time. And honestly, having a 9-year-old daughter, like, now I’m going to cry — it doesn’t cross my mind to ever leave her,” Vanessa tells PEOPLE.

Vanessa says that the experience of growing up without a mother motivates her to be the best mother Brooklyn can be and has taught her important lessons.
“I remember being that little girl and needing and yearning for that guidance, and that love, and that safe space. So in a weird way, I’m grateful that I came out on the other side of that, and now I know what not to do,” she says. she to PEOPLE. “I understand what I want to do and [Brooklyn] he accepts it with open arms and a lot of love.”

Vanessa also tells PEOPLE about a key rule she and Nick always follow when it comes to their three children.
“One thing we’ve always agreed on is that we will always, always let our children know how much we love them,” she says. “It sounds so simple, but I didn’t have that constant affirmation, physically and verbally, when I was younger, and neither did Nick.”
She continues, “I mean, of course you know you’re loved, but are you really? And sometimes, you like to hear it and you like to feel it. And so, I don’t think we’ve ever talked about, ‘This is what we have to do,’ but in between the two of us know that our children need to always know they are loved, especially after a disciplinary moment.”
