The ex-footballer, 48, and the fashion designer, 49, opened up about the early stages of their romance and marriage in a new Netflix documentary Beckham. While the four-part series focuses on David’s rise to stardom as an athlete, in the latest episode, the pair also deal with the difficult period they had at the height of his success in 2003.

Reflecting on the period in their relationship when David was playing for Real Madrid in Spain in 2003, Victoria spoke candidly during the episode, saying it was the “unhappiest of her life” and adding that the tabloid media’s involvement in their marriage during their stay in the European country it was “the most difficult period for us”.

After they renewed their vows in 2017, David commented on the ups and downs of their marriage in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.

“We know each other better than anyone. People were talking about, ‘Are we staying together because it’s a brand?’ Of course not.
