Facts/Trivia

  • At the age of 7, he joined a wrestling training center in Lalpur, Varanasi, 22 kilometers from his village. He used to ride his bike to the training center every day. Sometimes, he would hitchhike to the training center. At that time, his family’s financial condition was also not good. During the first years of his training, his family was unable to provide him with a proper diet. So, Vijay moved to a hotel in the Lucknow center of the Sports Authority of India. In an interview, recalling those days, he said:

Our financial situation was not good and it improved when my brother got a job in the Indian Army. Another brother is a bus driver. It took a lot of effort to get here. I won several gold and silver medals in the All India College Championships and the Junior and Senior National Championships. I also competed in the Asian Games and won gold medals at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in 2018 and 2019. “

  • In 2020, Vijay said in an interview that he wanted to participate in the Tokyo Olympics, but was unable to qualify. He said,

That was the most difficult time for me, not being able to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Now, I am fully prepared to face any challenge. I will definitely win a gold medal at my first Commonwealth Games. Winning a gold medal at the Paris Olympics will be my next goal. After winning a medal at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, I will request the state government to give me a job so that I can continue my practice without any financial constraints. “
