In 2004, he joined the theater group “Koothu-P-Pattarai” as an accountant and actor. He started out as a supporting character, playing the protagonist’s friend. His first film was M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (2004), in which he played the role of a boxing spectator.
Director Suseenthiran recommended his name to Seenu Ramasamy, who gave him his first leading role in the Tamil film Thenmerku Paruvakaatru (2010).
He made his television debut in the Tamil drama series Penn (2006).

- He likes to watch animated movies, and “Madagascar” is his favorite movie.
- There is an interesting story about his pen name “Makkal Selvan”. This is the title given to him by director Seenu Ramasamy. During the shooting of the song “Aandipatti Kanava Kaathu” from the movie “Dharma Durai (2016)”, he reached the shooting location before the crew. While he was waiting for the crew, he smelled some workers from the nearby village of Munnar cooking tamarind rice. He asked the driver to ask the workers to give him some rice. When Seenu arrived, Vijay shared some rice with him too. Seenu also liked the rice and asked for more, to which the workers agreed. It was then that Seenu decided to give him the title of ‘Makkal Selvan’ which means the one loved by the people. After finishing the rice, Seenu gave back the rupees. 500 to Vijay.

- He took commerce in school because he didn’t want to do engineering and because all his friends were studying commerce in DB Jain College.
- After graduation, he joined a cement wholesale company as an account assistant.
- He worked various jobs for pocket money, such as working as a salesperson in a retail store, a cashier in a fast-food restaurant, and an operator in a phone booth.
- He tried his luck in CA and ICWA foundation but failed to pass the exam.
- He had the responsibility to take care of his three siblings and therefore, he moved to Dubai. He worked as an accountant there only because the job there paid him four times what he did in India.
- He never wanted to be an actor. All he wants is to pay off his mortgage, get married and build a house of his own. Acting was just a blessing for him.
- Unsatisfied with his job, he returned to India in 2003 and subsequently started an interior decoration business with friends. He then joined a marketing company selling ready-made kitchens.
- One day, when he saw a poster of Koothupattarai, the famous Tamil theater company he had worked in, he was reminded of the famous cinematographer and director Balu Mahendra.
