Vijender Singh

Vijender Singh is an Indian boxer who turned professional in 2015. He was the first Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. In 2019, he joined the Indian National Congress and contested the 2019 general election from the South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.

Vijender Singh was born on October 29, 1985 in a Jat family in Kaluvas, Bhiwani, Haryana, India (age 2018: 33 years). His father Mahipal Singh Beniwal was a bus driver on Haryana highways. He received his primary education in Kaluas village and his secondary education in Bhiwani. He studied at Vaish College of Education, Bhiwani, where he received his bachelor’s degree. Inspired by boxer Raj Kumar Sangwan, Vijender decided to become a boxer. His elder brother Manoj is also a boxer. When his brother Manoj was drafted into the Indian Army for his boxing credentials, Vijender received financial support from his brother to become a good boxer. He trained at Bhiwani Boxing Club where former national level boxer and his coach Jagdish Singh noticed his talent and groomed him in the sport. Vijender Singh first received recognition when he won the state-level competition. In 1997, he won a silver medal at the first Junior National Championships, and later at the 2000 National Championships, he won his first gold medal. In 2003, he became the All India Youth Boxing Champion.

In 2004, he participated in the welterweight competition at the Athens Olympics, but failed to win a medal and lost to Turkey’s Mustafa Karagolu 20-25. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, he defeated England’s Neil Perkins in the semi-finals and won the silver medal, but ultimately lost to South Africa’s Bongani Mwelase. Later, he decided to fight in the middleweight division. In 2006, he won a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Doha. He became famous at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he defeated Ecuador’s Carlos Gongora in the quarterfinals and won the bronze medal. In 2009, he was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khair Ratna Award, the country’s highest sporting honor.

In January 2010, he was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution to sports in India. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, he lost to England’s Anthony Ogogo in the semi-finals and consoled himself with a bronze medal. In the same year, he defeated Uzbekistan’s Abos Atoyev 7-0 in the Asian Games final and won the gold medal. At the 2012 London Olympics, he lost to Uzbekistan’s Abos Atoyev 13-17 in the quarterfinals. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he lost to England’s Anthony Fowler in the final and won the silver medal. In 2015, Vijender turned pro and signed a multi-year contract with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment.
