Before entering the film industry, Vinay Ford worked various small jobs in places like restaurants, coffee shops, medical shops and call centres. During his first year in college, he joined the Lokadharmi Theater and became an active artist there. In 2004, he received the National Scholarship for the Best Senior Thespian from the Government of India, which continued till 2006. During his graduation from FTII in Pune, he came across an audition opportunity for Shyamaprasad’s film Ritu while talking to an actor. FTII aspirants. Later, he auditioned and was selected to play the role of gay Jamal in the film “Ritu”. In 2011, he starred alongside Naseeruddin Shah in the Indo-Canadian thriller Blueberry Hunt, which was released in India five years later in 2016.
In 2012, he played one of the lead roles in the Malayalam film Navagatharkku Swagatham, but the film did not do well at the box office. In the same year, he played Nanmayil Suran in the Malayalam thriller Shutter. The film was a success and was screened at the 9th Dubai International Film Festival and the 17th Kerala International Film Festival.
In 2014, he played Shan Shahar in the movie “The Seventh Day”. In 2015, he made his breakthrough with the movie “Premam”, in which he played the role of Vimal Sir. He became instantly popular for his excellent comic timing and unique dialogue delivery style in the film, so much so that some of his dialogues (such as “Java simple aanu.. pinne power.. powerlumaanu”) attracted a cult following.
In 2015, he starred in the comedy thriller “Urumbukar Urangalila”. He has also appeared in many other films such as Kohinoor (2015), Karma Cartel (2015), Rasputin (2015), Urumbukal Urangarilla (2015), Kammatti Paadam (2016), Hello Namasthe” (2016), “Kismath” (2016), “Georgettans Pooram” (2017), Examples (2017) and God Says (2017). In 2019, he played a Malayalam teacher suffering from thinning hair in the film Thamasha, which earned him great appreciation, with some critics calling it one of his best performances . He was later appreciated for his roles in the films Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte (2020), Mohan Kumar Fans (2021) and Malik (2021).

- Vinay said films can only appeal to a certain group of people and being part of a TV show can help him reach out to a wider audience. He believed that being in a movie theater limited the audience’s choices, whereas when watching television, if people didn’t like a particular program, they could always switch channels, which is why he started hosting television shows.
- Vinay does not drink any alcoholic beverages, so playing the role of Harishchandran in the film Godse was a challenge for him.
- Vinay had to compete with his wife to shoot for the film “Premam” as the shooting date collided with the engagement day.
