Vinod Mehta began his career in 1974 as the editor of men’s magazine Debonair, after trying many other jobs, including as a factory worker in the UK. Mehta founded several popular periodicals in India, including The Sunday Observer in 1981, The India Post in 1987, The Independent in 1989, The Herald in 1990 and The Indian Post in 1995 of Outlook and later rose to prominence in India as an editor. He has served as Editor for the Outlook Group. Served as Chairman from 1995 to February 2012.
Later, Mehta wrote biographies of Meena Kumari and Sanjay Gandhi. In 2001, he published a series of articles on the theme of “Mr. Editor, how close are you to the Prime Minister? In 2011, Mehta wrote his autobiography and titled it “Lucknow Boy”. Vinod is a television panelist and has appeared on shows such as Times Now’s Newshour and CNN-IBN India at 9.
As a veteran journalist, he is often asked by news anchors to provide analysis on key issues and scenarios. He was subsequently seen as President of the Editors Guild of India and was briefly the author and speaker of “Letter from India” for the BBC World Service and BBC Radio.

“Indian Express” reporter sued Vinod Mehta, seeking compensation of 1 billion rupees.
In 2012, Indian Express Group Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta filed a lawsuit against Vinod Mehta, Editorial Director of Outlook Publications Group, editor and journalist of Open magazine, demanding compensation of 1 billion rupees. According to Gupta’s lawyers, Mehta’s interview with Open reporter Hartosh Singh Bahl contained “defamatory and slanderous accusations.”
Awards
On February 9, 2015, Vinod Mehta was awarded the Yash Bhatti Award by the Uttar Pradesh government in recognition of his work in the field of journalism.

Vinod Mehta passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, at the age of 73 due to multiple organ failure on March 8, 2015.
