Vinod Todd was an Indian politician. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he started his political career as a student activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and rose to become the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has held many important positions in the Maharashtra government, including as Leader of Opposition during the Prithviraj Chavan government and as Education, Sports, Culture and Marathi Minister during the Devendra Fadnavis government.

Vinod Tawde began his political career in 1980 by joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), an RSS-affiliated organization. In 1988, Vinod was appointed general secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and was promoted to the post of state secretary in 1993.
In 1995, Vinod joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as an active member. He was appointed as the Maharashtra state general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party; he served as the party’s general secretary for four years. In 1999, he became the youngest president of the Mumbai region of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as party chairman for twelve years. In 2008, Vinod was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. In 2011, he was elected as the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council during the Prithviraj Chavan government.
In 2014, Vinod Todd won the Maharashtra Assembly elections from Borivali constituency with a margin of 80,000 votes and became a member of the Legislative Assembly. Devendra Fadnavis made him the Minister of School Education, Higher and Technical Education, Marathi, Cultural Affairs and Sports.
During his tenure, he undertook many public interest initiatives including the Human Organ Transplantation Act, Maharashtra State Council for International Education and Pustakanch Gaav.
In 2019, he was appointed as the national secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and in 2021, he was appointed as the general secretary of the party under President Jagat Prakash Nadda.

Fake degree controversy
In 2015, opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded Tawde’s resignation as his bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from Sant Dnyaneshwar University in Pune was invalid. According to reports, Sant Dnyaneshwar University in Pune is neither affiliated to the University Grants Commission (UGC) nor the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). In 2005, the Maharashtra High Court ordered that Sant Dnyaneshwar University in Pune had no authority to award degrees and that degrees awarded before 2005 were invalid.
In defense of himself, Vinod Tad told the media,
I mentioned this in all my election affidavits and I did not deceive anyone. I did not enjoy the graduate benefits that were included in my passport, nor was I registered as a voter in the graduate constituency. Vidyapeeth offers bridge courses to impart theoretical knowledge and practical experience to students. I entered school in 1980 and graduated in 1984. The program includes part-time education and a part-time internship. I know this university is not recognized by the government, but I don’t mind that. ”
Arrest of student ordered over release of recording of interaction
In 2019, while interacting with journalism students at a university in Amravati, Vinod Tawde was asked about the soaring college tuition fees and the high cost of education. replied:
If you can’t afford tuition, get a job and give up the idea of studying. “
The entire incident was recorded by student Yuvraj Dabad. Tad reportedly asked Yuvraj to delete the video and ordered his arrest. Police followed orders and detained him for several hours and took his mobile phone.
