dispute

  • Tensions in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA) grew tense on March 15, 2016, during the Budget Session when Waris Pathan said that he would not chant “Bharat Mata ki Jai” under any circumstances. The MLA members unanimously proposed to suspend Waris Pathan from the assembly seat, leading to the Speaker suspending him. Pathan later objected to the suspension of his seat, saying:

I love my country. I was born here and I will die here. I will never insult my country. Don’t judge anyone’s love for their country by just one slogan. India go, India go, Maharashtra go.”

  • In 2017, Waris Pathan was strongly criticized by several Muslim groups in India and members of his political party AIMIM for chanting “Ganpati Bappa Maurya” at a Ganesha event in Mumbai’s Byculla constituency. He addressed the devotees present and said that “he prayed that Ganesha would remove all obstacles from their path and bring them happiness and prosperity.” This move drew criticism from Muslim clerics who reportedly considered the chant un-Islamic for Muslims, and he subsequently released an apology video.

  • On February 19, 2020, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Waris Pathan made a controversial statement at an anti-CAA rally in Kalaburagi, Karnataka. He said,

It is time for us to unite and achieve freedom. Remember, we have only 150 million rupees but can rule over 100 million rupees.”

Reportedly, he made this statement to the effect that 150 million Indian Muslims can rule over 1 billion Hindus. The Kalaburagi police has filed a case against Waris Pathan under Sections 117 (abetment of public offence), 153 (intention to provoke riot) and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Indian Penal Code. He had to face public wrath for making the so-called anti-national remarks. He later retracted his statement saying that his remarks were misunderstood by people. He further explained that the ‘100’ in the statement refers to 100 people who were involved in anti-Muslim politics.
