Security camera footage posted on YouTube shows a group of masked youths approaching a luxury SUV as it is parked on a quiet residential road.

The time code shows that the brazen thieves were confident enough of a quick escape that they took the risk in the middle of the evening rather than wait until the wee hours.

In a terrifying twist, the master con artist reaches into his pocket while standing between the car and the owner’s house and unlocks the car within seconds.

It appears they may have used a relay device to amplify the signal from the key fob inside the property and tricked the car’s keyless entry system into deactivating it.

After easily opening the door, they crouched in the driver’s footwell while his two accomplices kept watch.

What he does next isn’t clear in the clip, but it resembles a common ignition system wiring method.

Less than 20 seconds later, the engine starts and the lights come on.

If it weren’t for the extra layer of protection the owner put in place, the gang would likely have escaped without a trace.

However, as soon as they tried to drive away, the “phantom” engine lock went off.

The device, which can be bought and installed for several hundred pounds afterwards, is connected to the ignition switch and is activated every time the car is started.

It can only be deactivated by a preloaded series of buttons on the dashboard or steering wheel specified by the owner, similar to a PIN code.

If this is not entered, the technician will force the engine to shut down as soon as you press the gas pedal.

It doesn’t rely on any key fob and has no indication that it’s installed, catching would-be thieves off guard.

And when it turns on, it can connect to a dedicated app on your phone to alert you and let you turn it off remotely.

In this case, the group was apparently spooked and jumped out of the motorbike which slowly rolled into a car parked in front.

Then they took him down the road as fast as they could for fear of being caught.

It came after a driver was spotted deliberately blocking the way to a primary school with his car in the middle of a furious parking queue.

Safety experts from Swansway Motor Group, a family-owned dealership brand based in Cheshire, have shared useful tips and stressed the importance of “thinking strategically” to stay one step ahead of criminals.

Data from LV General shows that 2023 was the worst year on record for car theft, making it more important than ever to know how to protect your vehicle.

Luckily, the team at Swansway have all the tricks you need.

First of all, they urged drivers to consider “strategic parking” to make the car more difficult to steal and a less attractive target.

Thieves are more likely to try to pinch motorbikes that are out of the way and in unsafe places.

Instead, try to store yours in a locked garage, a car park protected by barriers or at least on a well-lit street, preferably with CCTV coverage.

This will make it much more difficult to escape with him without being noticed.

Another tip is to use “old fashioned” visual deterrents.

Things like steering wheel locks and distinctive custom markings or bright paint can make stealing a car more time-consuming and harder to hide later.

Even keeping your car very clean can repel any shady characters as opportunistic thieves tend to target run-down vehicles on the basis that they won’t get away with it.

Finally, experts shared a great trick to combat a more modern and sinister form of theft.

The rise of keyless ignition has led to an increasing chance of “relay theft”, where criminals intercept the signal your fob communicates with your car and copy it, just as well as giving them the keys.

Fortunately, this can be easily prevented by keeping your fob in a Faraday pouch, which blocks wireless signals, when not in use.

A spokesperson for Swansway said: “Faraday bags are a simple but highly effective tool.

“By shielding your car keys from external signals, these pouches prevent remote signal interception, a common method modern thieves use to access vehicles without the need for a physical key.”
