USA, Boldt Castle At the beginning of the 20th century, a castle was built on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands archipelago in the Saint Lawrence River delta, where the border between the southern Canadian province of Ontario and the northern American state of New York passes. built. However, his fate turned out to be tragic.
The famous American architect and owner of a chain of luxury hotels, George Boldt, decided to give his beloved wife a gift for Valentine’s Day. He personally designed it and construction began.
A 6-story building was erected in the style of ancient German castles. It is planned to have 127 rooms, 365 windows, a swimming pool, an elevator and water supply. They also built a tower for children to play, laid tunnels and arranged a park. The yacht house is also worth noting.
But in 1904 Louise, Boldt’s wife, died of tuberculosis. The works were stopped, and the island itself with all the buildings was abandoned. Time and vandals took their toll, so the castle began to fall into disrepair.
However, justice prevailed in the end. In 1977, Boldt’s heirs sold the castle to the local authorities for a purely symbolic fee. However, a condition has been set that all money from the tours goes to the renovation of the building.
The castle found a new life. It was restored, and everything was put in order. Now it is a landmark not only at the local level. People come from all over to admire this creation of human hands.
