‘We’re in the dark’ Jay Slater’s dad rages as he demands answers over men who partied with teen before he fled ‘in fear’

JAYA Slater’s father has questioned why his teenage son ended up at a remote Airbnb with “two grown men” hours before he went missing.

Warren Slater, 58, believes the investigation into his son’s whereabouts should focus on a holiday in the Tenerife village of Masca.

He said: “My only question is, and this is where you start the investigation, why did two grown men take the boy to the valley for a bed and breakfast? I can’t understand it.

“Why? Why? You have to ask them why and then start from there.”

This comes after a TV investigator helping the family revealed that Jay had left the £40-a-night Airbnb feeling “scared”.

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas claims the boy refused to return on holiday despite needing water and a low phone battery.

He told his friends that “he can’t do that” and that it was already a 30-minute walk.

Dad Warren, who was today searching the narrow ravine near the village of Masca where Jay was last seen, said police were not saying much to the family about their investigation.

He added that he had become “frustrated” and “angry” that more had not been done to find his son.

He said: “I’ve been through a bit of grief and I’m angry, if that makes any sense. I’m angry that nothing happened.”

The lack of information drove Warren to become a detective himself.

“The police here are doing their own investigation. They’re not really telling us anything, they’re not telling you much, we’re in the dark,” he said.

“All I do is the Colombo bite. I mean, he could be here, you never know, but as a dad I don’t want him to be.

“Just don’t disappear. He’s a young guy, he’s fit. He’s better than all of us put together.

“He has played football all his life, he is as healthy as a flea. Just don’t disappear.

“If I leave you here and then you just disappear, don’t you think the police would be on my case?”

Warren said he will never give up trying to find his missing son.

He was with Jay’s brother Zak and the teenager’s uncle who joined the desperate hunt in the 17 days since Jay went missing.

“We were actually looking for two hours,” he said.

“We went all the way down. We walked as far as you could until it got too dangerous.

“There are dogs in those caves, so if there are dogs there, there must be people.”

JAY LOOKING FOR

Warren added that he would be furious if the search for Jay returned to the UK and was called off.

But he said he would be happy to leave the decision-making to the experts here in Tenerife.

He said, “They know best. Do you think they should keep looking?

“If it was in England, I would raise a stink, but we are in a foreign country and we have to leave it to the people who know best.

“Like we said, if he left the B&B at 9am, got here and came all the way back, that’s an hour and a half, so 10.30am.

“There is no car at 10:30, so someone would have seen it.”

The men parked in a car park next to the main road a few minutes’ drive past the main tourist viewpoint, before heading down a windy dirt track.

They split up and scoured thick bushes and cacti in 22C heat for any sign of Jay, three days after police called off the official search.

The apprentice bricklayer has not been seen or heard from since he called his friend at 8.50am last Monday morning to say he was lost, needed water and his phone battery was low.

“This is where his phone pinged the last time,” Warren said, pointing to the area.

“This was a valley and I had reached the point of no return.

“If I had hiking boots and ropes, I’d go for it, but I can’t do it in Adidas sandals.”

Pointing to a large mountain peak in the distance, Warren said, “If somebody had told me ‘he’s on that hill and you’re going to find him,’ I would have climbed that fucking hill and found him.

“It’s so funny that someone can just disappear.”

Five questions still unanswered about Jay Slater’s disappearance

Rolex missing after ‘fight’

Police launched a new investigation Saturday morning into the theft of a Rolex watch just hours before Jay went missing.

It’s unclear how Jay’s disappearance might be connected, but one of Jay’s friends told detectives that the alleged theft may have led to Jay wandering off on his own to try to find the watch.

The Rolex went missing when a fight broke out at the club where Jay was partying, and investigators questioned taxi drivers and bar staff who were on the strip.

Police clear duo

Two mystery Brits who were partying with Jay Slater on the night he disappeared have been branded “irrelevant” by investigators.

Detective Mark Williams-Thomas said the men had stayed with Jay at an Airbnb in Tenerife before he disappeared.

Both are said to be in their late 30s or early 40s and from Luton, Bedfordshire, with one nicknamed “Johnny Vegas”.

The men were only asked to speak to officers briefly before being allowed to fly home to the UK.

Only six volunteers for the ‘massive’ search

Yesterday, Tenerife police launched what they called a “massive” new search with the help of specialist volunteers to find the 19-year-old Briton.

However, only six volunteers reportedly showed up, according to Tiktoker Paul Arnott (29), who flew in to help in the search.

Jay’s father Warren and older brother Zak were seen at the scene of the search.

The area being searched is a 2,000-foot gorge that has a steep footpath that descends to the sea.

Mysterious last phone calls

Jay’s last phone call to his friend Lucy Law was shrouded in mystery and opened up several questions.

The 18-year-old woman told reporters that Jay called her in a panic at around 8.30am on Monday 17 June.

She recalled him saying he couldn’t catch the bus and would walk back to his apartment.

Jay told her that his phone was almost out of power, that he cut his leg on a prickly cactus, and that he really needed a drink.

Ping phone

Search teams narrowed their efforts to a small group of buildings near where Jay’s phone last pinged, but found nothing last week.

Jay went on a 45-minute car journey with two men to an Airbnb near Masco in Rural de Teno, a national park in the north of the island.

He posted a Snapchat picture of the £40-a-night dig around 7.30am, in which he appeared to be holding a cigarette and walking down stone steps.

After deciding to leave the cabin, Jay called Lucy before his cell phone went dead at 8:50 a.m. near the park’s hiking trail.

Asked if he thought Jay might be headed for the sea that could be seen in the distance, he said, “Maybe.”

He added: “It’s certainly not that big of an area. They have the resources, they’ve certainly searched it.

– We followed the path all the way to the valley.

Warren, who suffered cuts on his arm and leg during the search, said he often went hiking with Jay as a child.

“I took him on a lot of trails when he was a kid where we live,” he said.

“He doesn’t know the area, but I used to take him to Pendle Hill when he was a kid.”

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE

The 19-year-old was on his first holiday without his family when he disappeared while returning to his accommodation last Monday morning.

Jay went to two people he met at the NRG music festival and, after missing the bus back, set off on what would be an 11-hour walk.

It comes after a private investigator discovered that Jay “stole a Rolex” before he disappeared and the first picture of the man who rented the Airbnb he spent his last night in was revealed.

It is claimed that Jay admitted to snapping the precious watch on Snapchat to friends after leaving the club in the early hours of June 17.

Today, former detective Mark Williams-Thomas made the incredible claims about Jay in an eight-minute video.

He said the apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire posted a Snapchat the night before he disappeared saying he had taken a £12,000 Rolex from an unknown person.

According to Mark – who worked on the Madeleine McCann case – the teenager shared the post with friends while in a hire car.

Speaking about the criticism the family has received for wanting to withdraw some of the GoFundMe donations, which have now reached almost £50,000, he said: “We just want to pay our hotel, we don’t want to do anything.”

GoFundMe is being used to fund volunteer detectives, including British amateur climber Paul Arnott.

When asked if he would stay as long as needed, he said: “I know his mom wants to, maybe his brother wants to, but you can’t stay forever.

“His mom says ‘he hasn’t been found, I’m not leaving this island.’

“But it’s hard, so freaking hard. There’s no straight line to follow.

“The police said this was his last location. I don’t know… it’s just a mystery… it’s confusing.”
