The Writers Guild of America (WGA) 2023 strike has reached a tentative new deal with Hollywood studios to end the writers’ strike.
“We have reached a tentative agreement on the new MBA for 2023, which is to say an agreement in principle on all points of the agreement, subject to the development of final contract language,” the guild told its members Sunday in a statement sent to PEOPLE.
“We can say, with great pride, that this contract is exceptional – with significant gains and protections for writers in every membership sector,” the guild added.
Specific details of the WGA framework agreement were not disclosed, but the guild said in a statement that a summary would be provided before the vote on membership ratification.
The strike, which first began on May 2, has lasted more than 140 days as the union representing entertainment writers who work in film, television, news and online media protested across the country to demand better wages and other key conditions. points, including staff obligations and duration of employment.
The new deal was signed with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) — which represents Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC Universal, Paramount and Sony — after the two groups met face-to-face Wednesday, then again virtually Sunday.

During the work stoppage, which also coincided with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, most of Hollywood was shut down, with late-night shows going off the air immediately after the WGA strike began, and many other film and TV productions halted with no new material to record.
The biggest names in Hollywood, e.g Abbott Elementary School creator and star Quinta Brunson, cast Parks and recreation and Billy Crystal are among those who came out to the rallies.
Ongoing strikes have also resulted in film and television delays. Some projects have also been completely cancelled. And despite the strike, some productions were given permission to continue filming, including The house of the dragon and the Anne Hathaway film Mother Mary.

The 2023 strike marked the first time the union has refused to work since 2007, when the WGA and AMPTP failed to reach an agreement on DVD scraps and other issues. That break lasted a little over three months.
The longest strike was in 1988 and lasted 153 days. Major issues at the time included residuals for one-hour shows and expanded creative rights.
