As the third largest country in the entire world, the United States of America has a staggering total of 50 states (not including the capital). Whether you’re from the US or another country, here are some fun facts you might not have known about the US:
- There are 5 US territories. US territories are places outside of standard US borders that still qualify as US soil if you visit them. They include Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
- There are 3 loosely associated states. The Free Associated States exist as their own separate nations, but have signed the Compact of Free Association with America. According to the US government, these countries (through the aforementioned Agreement) “receive US economic aid and allow the United States to operate military bases on their soil and make decisions affecting mutual security.” Freely associated states include the Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia.[1]
- Alaska is the largest American state. Alaska is by far the largest state in the US, covering approximately 665,384 square miles (1,723,337 km²). Texas is the largest continental US state, covering 268,596 square miles (695,662 km²).
- Rhode Island is the smallest American state. Rhode Island is only 1,545 square miles (4,001 km²). Delaware is the second smallest state at 2,489 square miles (6,446 km²).
- California is the most populous state. California holds the crown with over 39 million residents. Texas is in second place with over 30 million inhabitants.
- Wyoming is the least populated state. Despite being the 10th largest state, Wyoming has a population of less than 600,000. Vermont is the second least populous state with just under 650,000 residents.
- New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago are the most populated cities. It’s no surprise that NYC, LA, and Chicago are on the podium among overcrowded cities. Phoenix, however, takes the crown as the largest city that also serves as the state capital.
- The four most populous American cities are located in Texas. As of 2022, Houston (#4), San Antonio (#7), Dallas (#9) and Austin (#10) make up the top 10 list.
