The term “Therian” seems to be popping up more and more on social media. But what exactly does this term mean and what does it mean to be part of the Therian community?

  • Therians are individuals who identify as certain non-human animals, while still acknowledging and understanding that they are human. A person doesn’t “choose” to be a Therian, nor do they choose the animal they identify with – it’s a conclusion they come to based on the experiences they’ve had.

    • Being a Therian is an incredibly individualistic experience. Some Therians might fully identify with the animal (still acknowledging that they are human), while others might partially identify with aspects of the animal.
  • Therians belong to the alterhuman community. “Alterhuman” is an umbrella term for individuals who identify as something other than human (in the case of Therians, animals). The Alterhuman community includes (but is not limited to) groups such as:

    • Otherkin: People who partially or fully identify as a non-human creature or character. Therians fall under the Otherkin umbrella.

    • Fictionkin: People who partially or fully identify as a fictional character or species. Fictionkin also falls under the Otherkin umbrella.

  • Terriers are not furry. Furries are individuals who enjoy content related to anthropomorphic beings and characters. Many furries develop a fursona, which is an anthropomorphic figure (which some choose to mask). However, being furry is a fan-based hobby, while being a Therian is part of a person’s core identity.

    • Some Therians may use special appendages to better relate to their theriotype (the animal they identify with), but this is still distinctly different from being furry.
  • Therianthropy is not a religion or belief system. While many Therians have formed their own community, this community has no religious basis. There are no special deities, rituals, or anything at all religiously associated with being a Therian.
  • Therians and quadrobics are not mutually exclusive. Quadrobic is a form of movement and exercise that involves standing on all fours. While Therians can better connect with their animal selves with quadrobics, it ultimately depends on the individual—quadrobics is not an expectation or a defining quality of a Therian.
  • There’s nothing wrong with being a Therian. The idea of Therianthropy can seem a bit foreign and confusing at first, especially if you are not familiar with the alterhuman and alien communities. However, it is important to remember that Therians do not indulge in fantasy: they recognize and admit that they are human beings and that it is impossible for them to physically exist as animals.

What do therians experience?
Therians go through experiences associated with their animal identity, most commonly known as “relocation”. These changes are never physical, as Terians do not believe they can physically transform into their animal identity. Some well-known changes include:

  • Phantom Movement: Therians have a distinct sense of having unique or distinct body parts associated with their animal identity, such as tails, ears, or hooves.

  • Mental Change: The Therian experiences the thoughts and instincts of his animal identity.

  • Dream Shifting: The Therian becomes their animal identity whenever they fall asleep or experience other types of shifting while dreaming.

  • Sensory Alteration: A Therian experiences their physical senses in a manner consistent with their animal identity.

  • Astral Shifting: The Therian goes to the astral plane in the form of his animalistic identity.

Important Vocab

  • Therianthropy: The phenomenon of people identifying as animals (which are not human in form).

  • Theriotype: An animalistic identity with which the Therian connects deeply.

  • Polytherian: A therian who has multiple theriotypes.

  • Species Dysphoria: The feeling of discomfort with existing as a human rather than as one’s theriotype. This is not a universal experience among Therians.

  • Were: An obsolete term that predates Therian. It fell out of use in the mid-2000s, and Therian is now the actual term used by the community.
