1. Deku’s origin
Deku—Izuku Midoriya—is inspired by Jack Midoriya, a character from the one-shot manga series My Hero. Like Deku, Jack Midoriya dreams of being a superhero, even though he’s a salaryman (or an office clerk), not a student.

2. Deku’s name
He was nicknamed “Deku” by Bakugo; its actual meaning in Japanese is “wooden doll” or “doll”, making it basically Bakugou’s way of implying that Deku is useless and easy to bully. Luckily, Deku finds a way to take the name and make it his own on the show!

3. Mina’s alien connections
Mina Ashido’s (Pinky) parts are directly inspired by Ridley Scott’s Alien film series—the aliens, to be exact. Like the xenomorphs in Alien, Mina has acid blood. She was also called Ridley in early drafts of the script!

4. Beautiful Bakugo?
MHA series creator Kohei Horikoshi originally planned for Bakugo to be a kind, classy character. Horikoshi eventually concluded that the good-natured Bakugo might be too boring for readers since Deku, the main character, is already so good-natured himself. Thus was born the brash and abrasive (yet lovable) Bakugo!

5. Name meanings
Many characters in Class 1A have meaningful names. Kohei Horikoshi ensured that each character’s name was in some way a reference to either their trait or personality. For example:

  • Bakugou’s name means bomb (baku) and strength (go).
  • The name Tenya Ida comes from “Idaten”, a term derived from the name of the Buddhist hero Skanda, used to describe someone quick on their feet.
  • Ochaco’s last name, Ururaka, means “beautiful day” in Japanese (a reference to her optimism and cheerfulness).
  • The name Denki Kaminaria means electricity (denki) and thunder (kaminari).

6. Tsuyu and Toro
When first conceptualized, Tsuyu Asui and Toro Hagakure were actually boys – not girls. However, creator Kohei Horikoshi realized that the majority of Class 1A were boys (fourteen boys and six girls, although there would have been sixteen boys and four girls if Tsuyu and Toro had not been changed).

7. Ochac’s joke
The Ochaco that everyone knows and loves has the property of zero gravity—but, originally, that wasn’t the case. Ochac’s original fora was Gigantification (the ability to grow to gigantic proportions), which is now the fora of another MHA character, Mt. Lady. Kohei Horikoshi felt that gigantification was too severe a handicap for a hero-in-training; therefore Ochaco got a different trait and Gigantification got Mt. Lady.

8. Superman would beat All Might
In MHA, All Might is one of the world’s most powerful heroes—and his character is a reference to Superman, the DC comic book hero. Kohei Horikoshi was asked who would win in a fight, and he confidently replied that Superman would be the winner (mostly because of his laser eyes).

9. Dragon Ball connections
Kohei Horikoshi is a huge fan of Dragon Ball Z—so much so that Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball, partly inspired All Might’s look. In fact, he also inspires aspects of All Might’s personality; both are courageous and iconic characters who inspire others to be heroes.

10. Todoroki’s character parallels
Some MHA fans have pointed out that Shoto Todoroki looks a lot like Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both have fire manipulation powers, abusive fathers and, most obviously, burn scars around their left eyes.
