Your short-term memory is responsible for storing all the temporary information you’ve learned within a short period of time. Your brain can hold about 5 to 7 items in your short-term memory for about 15 to 30 seconds. For example, you can remember a phone number, a license plate, or a name on a poster. Once the information has passed through your short-term memory, it can be pushed into your long-term memory, which is the permanent storage place in the brain where all your memories are kept.

So why is short-term memory important? It’s important in the short term because it helps you function on a daily basis. In other words, use it every second of every day! Remembering where you put your keys, taking notes during a meeting, remembering the name of someone you just met, and even following directions all require short-term memory.

If your short-term memory is impaired, it can affect your daily life. Short-term memory loss can occur due to age, depression and anxiety, lack of sleep, medications, or head trauma.

Because short-term memory is so important to your life, how can you improve it? Improving your short-term memory isn’t rocket science! All you have to do is take a few moments every day for brain activity and live a healthy lifestyle. For example, try doing these tasks every day to improve your memory:

  • Repeat and recite what you hear or read.
  • Eat brain foods like blueberries, salmon, broccoli and dark chocolate.
  • Solve a crossword or Sudoku.
  • Write down the information as you get it.
  • Take up a new hobby or pursue a current hobby.
  • Exercise or move your body for at least 30 minutes every day.
  • Get enough sleep every night.
