While many are familiar with the 12 signs of the zodiac wheel, some may not know that these signs are also associated with the elements of Earth, Fire, Water, and of course, Air.
Three astrological signs belong to the air category: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Although these three signs do not sit next to each other in the horoscope wheel, they share many characteristics. According to Aliza Kelly, an astrologer of more than a decade and the person behind The Curiosity Report with Aliza Kelly, air signs are generally caring, considerate and socially aware.
What are the Libra personality traits? The complete guide to the zodiac sign
What else do you need to know about air signs? Below, Kelly explains the characteristics of air signs, which signs they’re most — and least — compatible with, and more.
What are air signs?
The astrological constellations of Gemini (May 20 to June 20), Libra (September 23 to October 22) and Aquarius (January 20 to February 18) are three air signs in the zodiac. Although these signs are not next to each other on the zodiac wheel, they share a lot in common.
“Air, as an element… is invisible,” Kelly tells PEOPLE. “It’s everywhere, it’s kind of an omnipresent, omnipresent energy that can really amplify other elements [of Earth, Fire and Water]. The energy of the Air itself is very social.”
However, this does not mean that all air signs are social butterflies. As Kelly points out, “When we talk about social energy, it’s not really about being introverted or extroverted, it’s about being aware.” She adds, “You can be an introvert and still be aware of social dynamics or still care about what’s going on in the world. … [It’s how you think about] connection networks.”
Kelly also says the air signs are an imaginary group, explaining, “It’s about the mind, our cognition, our intellectualism, our thoughts.”
What are the characteristics of air signs?
All three air signs share characteristics of their overarching element, including “sociability, concern for others, concern for dynamism, concern for intellectualism, concern for thoughts, words [and] concepts,” Kelly tells PEOPLE.
However, each air sign is unique in the way they think about their relationships with people and relationships with others. Kelly explains, “As we move through the signs in any elemental group, they kind of build on the energy of the previous one.”
Gemini
Gemini sign.
As the first of the air signs, Kelly says Gemini has the most youthful energy surrounding air concepts. “[Gemini is] very playful, it’s very curious,” she says. “He likes to be…stimulated by things, [it] he likes to have fun [and it] he likes to entertain.”
“It definitely has a very … youthful spirit,” Kelly concludes of the sign.
Libra
Libra sign.
Building on the momentum of the constellation before it, Libra evolves from Gemini, who are more concerned with social groups, focusing on partnership. “Libra is very focused on committed relationships, on contracts, on alliances,” says Kelly. “It’s about balance and harmony and trying to create balance. It is the diplomat of the zodiac.”
Amnion
Aquarius sign.
As the last of the air signs, Kelly calls Aquarius “fully mature.” She explains, “It’s not so much thinking about individuals as it is about society as a whole, so it’s very kind of a macro scale. [It’s] systems thinking, [it’s] thinking about government, [it’s] thinking about culture.”
Additionally, Kelly says members of this sign are focused on how they can “revolutionize or change or transform the status quo.”
Which signs are air signs most compatible with?
Although Kelly says all air signs are compatible with each other because of a shared belief system, they are also compatible with the Fire elements of Aries and Leo. Each air sign also has one or two signs with which it is individually most compatible.
- Gemini: According to Kelly, easy-going Geminis are most compatible with Aries and Leo — two Fire signs characterized by passion and warmth.
- Libra: When it comes to romantic Libras, Kelly says their hearts will dance because of the different Fire signs – Leo and Sagittarius. Although Kelly calls both signs “brave and adventurous,” Sagittarius (a more mature Fire sign) is more subdued and reflective than its Leo counterpart.
- Aquarius: Kelly says a high-minded Aquarius will find a match in an Aries or a Sagittarius.
Which signs are Air signs least compatible with?
On the whole, Kelly says that air signs are least compatible with signs that fall under the element of Earth, which includes Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. “Earth signs are very much about what’s real and what’s concrete,” she says. “Air is very much about…what can be imagined.”
- Gemini: According to Kelly, Gemini can be the least compatible with Virgo, as members of this sign can be too serious and stubborn for Gemini’s ever-inquisitive nature.
- Libra: Harmony-loving Libras could easily clash with Capricorn’s direct and sometimes stern nature, warns Kelly.
- Aquarius: Kelly says the idealistic, art-loving nature of Aquarius can clash with the practical, business-like ways of Taurus.
