What is the air quality index in Delhi today?
During the meeting, CAQM said that special focus has been placed on controlling pollution from the transport sector, roads and buildings, bursting of firecrackers, and pollution from identified 13 pollution hotspot areas in Delhi. From Friday onwards, there was a sharp deterioration in Delhi’s air quality leading to wind speeds and a rapid increase in farm fires in neighboring states, leading to an emergency meeting and the introduction of advance pollution control measures. According to a bulletin issued by the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 212 on Friday, marking the air quality in the capital as poor. Shockingly, the air quality was significantly better and fell into the moderate category with an AQI of 177 just 24 hours before.
During the initial phase with an AQI falling into the poor category, a government-assessed response action plan is activated. This meant that the authorities now had the power to implement a range of measures including the suspension of unregistered construction sites. However, among other actions, there are fines imposed on visibly polluting vehicles and increased Pollution Control inspections. Allegedly, on Friday, the air quality in the city reached the bad category for the first time in 114 days. Since June 14, it has never happened that the AQI has been recorded at 213. However, there are many experts who have been cautious that the situation is expected to worsen as the winter season approaches and rice burning increases in agricultural states like Punjab and Haryana and notably, this is not an unusual or strange occurrence for Delhi’s habitat.
It is believed that every year that the southwest monsoon sets in, the city’s air quality tends to deteriorate, due to a shift in wind direction to northwesterly winds that appear cold and dry, along with a drop in temperatures that increase pollutant production. Along with this, various measures were taken like deployment of traffic police which forced them to reduce the force of jammers and regular cleaning and spraying of roads in Delhi.
