When New York Mets outfielder Pete Alonso met his wife-to-be, Haley Alonso, in 2015, he quickly knew she was “the one.”

The couple met while he was playing summer baseball in the Cape Cod League in 2015. Pete attended the University of Florida while Haley (née Walsh) attended Michigan State University, so the two maintained a long-distance relationship while they were finishing school.

“I just couldn’t get enough of her,” the MLB pro told ESPN in 2020. “For me, this was the real deal.”

After getting engaged in November 2018, Pete and Haley tied the knot in Tampa, Florida three years later. “For all the days of my life,” Haley wrote alongside a black-and-white photo of the couple kissing after their wedding.

Originally from Boston, Haley studied journalism and political science at Michigan State University, according to her WayUp profile. She graduated in 2016 and was a member of Alpha Phi.

“I’m thankful for my two favorite MSU students, namely my amazing grandparents who taught me the martial arts song by heart at the age of 2 and taught me that two colors don’t go together like green and white,” Haley wrote on Instagram to celebrate her graduation. “Today my lifelong dream of graduating from Michigan State University came true and I’m so happy they were there for me!”

She and Pete were in a long-distance relationship during college

Pete, who graduated from the University of Florida, met Haley in 2015 when he was playing summer baseball in the Cape Cod League. The two maintained a long-distance relationship until they graduated from their respective colleges, talking on the phone as much as possible. As Pete told ESPN, his college roommates teased him relentlessly and actively tried to sabotage his relationship. “It got so bad that they were totally tearing me apart because of it. And then I was really upset,” Pete told the newspaper. However, the two were undaunted and got engaged in November 2018. “I can’t believe I’m marrying this sweet soul who goes above and beyond every day to make me feel beautiful and so loved,” Haley wrote on Instagram after their engagement . “I mean, I found a man who sent me handwritten letters every day while we were long distance, so I’d have something to look forward to like we were in a notebook or something.”

Pete and Haley kicked off their wedding weekend in Ybor City, a neighborhood in Tampa that Haley called “the perfect backdrop.” She said that “tapas and paella for dinner, a cigar-rolling station on the balcony and an Irish band were a way to honor our Spanish and Irish heritage.” Their wedding ceremony was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa on November 12, 2021. Haley chronicled Pete’s journey from playing ball at the University of Florida to the big leagues. She cheered on her husband after his historic 2019 rookie season and back-to-back home run derby wins, and proudly cheered on the Mets during the 2022 playoffs. She shared a particularly sweet message after Pete was called up to the majors in 2019. “Pete me called today around noon and said ‘hey honey i’m big league. I’ll play opening day tomorrow.’ and we both cried…” she wrote on Instagram. “We’ve always talked about what this moment would be like, but let me tell you, it’s 10,000 times better than we could have ever imagined. I’ve never been prouder of anyone in my entire life and he deserves every bit of it.” Haley also supports Pete off the field and was by his side after his car accident in March 2022. Pete was on his way to his first day of spring training in Port St. Lucie, Florida, when a driver ran a red light and hit his truck, causing his vehicle to overturn three times. Despite everything, I couldn’t do what I do without my wife and my swing by my side every day and night,” he wrote. Pete’s support for his wife is also unwavering. “Happy Valentine’s Day to the love of my life 😍 Life is the best with you in it. It’s truly a blessing that you are my forever Valentine 😘”, he wrote on Instagram in 2023.

In October 2024, Haley had another chance to brag about her husband when his home run in the ninth inning of a wild-card playoff game led the Mets to victory. On her Instagram stories, Haley shared a video of Pete’s home run, writing “CRAZY!!!!!!”

She and Pete are involved in charity work

The Mets first baseman and his wife co-founded the Alonso Foundation. According to the nonprofit’s Instagram profile, the organization’s goal is to “stand up for and support those in our community who cannot.” To that end, the foundation raised money through a variety of different events, including a youth center to organize a derby in Pete’s hometown of Tampa and a comedy night. They have also run fundraising campaigns for veterans and animal rights organizations and for hurricane relief. Pete’s dedication to giving back is well known to Mets fans; terrorist attacks, he bought his teammates custom football boots to wear in honor of the victims and first responders, writes CBS News.

She is a dog’s mom

The Alonsos are the proud parents of a French bulldog named Brody. The dog’s original name was Brady, but Pete told ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian in 2020 that being from Boston, Haley knew too many dogs named Brady, so they changed the nickname a bit. (The Mets’ general manager at the time was Brodie Van Wagenen, but that was just a coincidence.)

Brody briefly had his own Instagram profile, and his profile stated that he was a mix of a bat, a bunny, a pig and an ET.

The couple also supported animal causes. In 2023, they helped sponsor a Labrador retriever named Bear, who was the service dog in training with K9s for the Warriors. Bear, one of the K9s for Warriors rescued from a high-kill shelter, joined Pete for spring training in Port St. Lucie and will become a veterinary service dog at risk when he finishes his training.

Pete and Haley met Pope Francis during their European honeymoon in 2021. “Literally #BLESSED,” Haley wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the encounter. They’ve also hung out with celebrities outside of the Vatican, like visiting Luke Combs backstage in Orlando in 2021 and bumping into Kesha during MLB All-Star Weekend in 2022.
