WhatsApp unveils passcode feature without password
Password-less passkey functionality for Android users is set to roll out, according to plans announced by Meta-owned WhatsApp. By eliminating the need for traditional SMS two-factor authentication, which can be cumbersome and insecure, this project aims to improve security and simplicity. The company said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that “passwords provide an easy and secure way for Android users to sign in again.” Your WhatsApp account can only be unlocked using your face, fingerprint or PIN.” While passwords were first tested in WhatsApp’s beta channel, they are almost ready to be available to all users. However, no details are known so far about adding WhatsApp passkeys for iPhone users.
The company revealed that Android support for passkeys will be added gradually over the coming weeks and months. Passwords use authentication mechanisms already on your device to offer an alternative to standard passwords. Apple and Google, the two largest IT companies, have already included support for the password for their user bases.
