Toy story 5 is officially on the horizon.

The beloved Pixar franchise, known for its heartwarming and nostalgic stories, returns with an all-new adventure featuring fan-favorite toys Buzz Lightyear and Woody, historically voiced by Tim Allen and Tom Hanks.

During Disney’s D23 show in August 2024, Pixar shared details about what’s next for Buzz, Woody and their toy friends, as well as announcing that the fifth film will be released in June 2026.

Director Andrew Stanton, a key figure in the making of the film Toy story universe, will take the helm and said at D23 that the latest installment will deal with contemporary issues, particularly the impact of technology on childhood play.

“IN Toy story 5 toy business becomes exponentially more difficult when our toy crew collides with what kids are obsessed with today: electronics,” he said at the event.

Toy story 4 ended with Woody and Buzz splitting up as the former joined Bo Peep (Annie Potts) to live life as a “lost toy”, freed from the constraints of having a child.

Throughout the film, Woody struggled to find his place with Bonnie, since she no longer needed him as much as Andy did. Buzz, realizing Woody’s choice, assured him that Bonnie would be fine without him and supported Woody’s decision to start a new chapter.

Meanwhile, Buzz stayed with Bonnie, continuing to live with Jessie (Joan Cusack), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Hamm (John Ratzenberger) and other toys, including new addition Forky (Tony Hale).

While details on the cast have not been officially released, Allen confirmed during an appearance The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in November 2023 that Disney had contacted him and Hanks about reprising their roles. His update comes more than six months after the entertainment company confirmed the project was underway.

The concept image released at D23 also hints at the return of beloved characters like Jessie, Rex, Forky and Hamm, although official confirmation of their voice actors is still awaited.

Toy story 5 director Stanton revealed that the central conflict of the latest film will involve toys struggling to stay relevant in the age of technology.

The concept art revealed at D23 shows the toys looking sadly at their owner engrossed in a tablet, hinting at the emotional and humorous struggles they’ll face as they try to regain the child’s attention.

In an interview with The Wrap in February 2023, Pete Docter, executive producer Toy story 5 and one of the creators and writers behind 1995 Toy story and its 1999 sequel, said the upcoming installment will be “surprising.”

“There’s some really cool stuff you haven’t seen,” he said.

Stanton, longtime Pixar director known for classics like Search None and Bug’s Lifewill direct Toy story 5. Stanton was the key creative force behind it Toy story series since its inception as a writer on all former Toy story movies.

He will direct alongside McKenna Harris, who produced Elementary and directed a Disney+ animated short Hi Albertobased on Rayaccording to The Wrap.

In August 2024, Harris took to Instagram to announce her excitement about working on the film.
