American TV

Television plays a significant role as the main mass media in the United States. As of 2011, almost 96.7% of households in the country owned television receivers, which indicates widespread access to this medium. As of August 2013, it was estimated that 114,200,000 American households owned at least one television set. In fact, it is common for households to have multiple devices.

The highest percentage of households with at least one TV was recorded in the 1996/97 season, reaching 98.4%. By contrast, in 1948 only 1% of US households owned a television, while by 1955 that number had skyrocketed to 75%. Cable television subscriptions also increased significantly, with 60% of all American households receiving cable television by 1992.

The television networks operating in the United States are not only the largest but also the most widely distributed in the world. Programs produced specifically for these networks received huge international distribution.

The 2000s and 2010s saw an increase in the number and popularity of critically acclaimed television series. Many critics claim that American television entered the modern golden age during this period, around the beginning of the 21st century. However, whether this golden age has ended or continues into the early 2020s remains a matter of debate.
