John Wick has become one of the most popular action franchises of all time.

The opening film — starring Canadian actor Keanu Reeves — opens with Wick, a legendary hit man coming out of retirement to get revenge on the men who broke into his home, beat him, and killed his dog (a gift from his late wife). However, after returning to the underworld ways of his past, Wick struggles to break free from the life of killing he once abandoned.

It is now 10 years since the series of films — the first film was published in 2014, followed by John Wick: Chapter 2 in 2017, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in 2019 and John Wick: Chapter 4 2023 — its first spinoff TV show debuted in September 2023: The Continental: From the World of John Wicknamed after and based on a franchise hotel chain that functions as a neutral ground for the underground.

Furthermore, John Wick universe will expand with several projects in the pipeline, including a 2025 spinoff film starring Ana de Armas, Ballerina.

John Wick: Chapter 2 saw Wick retreat back underground after being called upon to kill a member of the High Table — the International Assassins’ Guild in charge of the underworld — as a favor he had previously pledged before retiring. The film was another hit, grossing over $174 million worldwide.

The franchise is back with John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum 2019, which picks up right where the second movie left off as Wick is declared “excommunicado” (stripped of all underworld privileges). The film grossed $328 million, and Halle Berry stars as Sofia Al-Azwar — the manager of the Continental in Casablanca — who told PEOPLE in 2019, “The training was unlike anything I’ve experienced in my career, and I’ve done a few action movies before. ”

“After I saw John Wick 2, I researched how they did it,” she continued. “So I knew how hard it was. Just staying there changed his life. I don’t think I’ve ever worked harder or longer to prepare for a role in a movie.”

Reeves called Berry an “inspiration,” telling her during a 2019 press conference in New York, “When you come on screen, there’s an authenticity, an intimacy, a power. But there’s a mystery. There’s always a mystery to you.”

After the premiere in 2023. John Wick: Chapter 4 it has been hailed as a cinematic triumph for both the action genre and the franchise, with some critics calling it “one of the best action movies ever made”. It received the franchise’s highest Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94% and grossed $440 million.

As the bounty on Wick continued to grow, the film saw him try to earn his freedom by challenging the Marquis de Gramont—a powerful member of the High Table played by Bill Skarsgård—to a duel. In a world-traveling adventure, Wick fought to survive the prize until his duel as he traveled through Japan, Germany and France.

“I like challenges John Wickhe’s super intense,” Reeves told PEOPLE in March 2023. “He’s playful. I can do different things — drive, you know? [I get to use] nunchucks and do Judo movie, jujitsu movie. So I really enjoy it.”

The film also served as a tribute to Lance Reddick, who died seven days before the film’s release. He played Charon, a receptionist at the Continental in New York throughout the franchise. Reeves and John Wick director Chad Stahelski dedicated the film to Reddick in a joint statement obtained by PEOPLE, calling him “a consummate professional and a pleasure to work with.”

Peacock released a three-part prequel in 2023 The Continental: From the World of John Wickbased on the franchise’s signature hotel of the same name. The miniseries tells the story of Winston Scott (Colin Woodell), a popular character in the franchise — played by Ian McShane in the movies — who rose to power by taking over the hotel from Cormac O’Connor (Mel Gibson).

When will Ballerina be released?

Spinoff film titled Ballerina is set to hit theaters on June 6, 2025, and the film takes place between the third and fourth John Wick installments.

Ana de Armas stars as the lead character Eva Macarro — a killer dancer first introduced in Parabellum (then played by New York City Ballet principal dancer Unity Phelan) — who “begins her training in the murderous traditions of the Russian Roma,” according to the synopsis. In the trailer, audiences can see Eve fight intense, high-stakes battles as she seeks revenge for her family’s murder.

Under the leadership Underground by Len Wiseman, Ballerina also features an all-star ensemble cast, including Keanu Reeves, Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick (in his final screen appearance), Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, Ian McShane and more.

What is the future John Wick franchise?

Beyond Ballerina, John Wick fans can look forward to more as the franchise (known for its mythology, rules, and wide cast of intriguing characters) will branch out into a number of upcoming projects, including another spinoff film, a sequel, and even an anime.

In May 2024, Deadline reported that a spinoff film set in Hong Kong was officially in the works, with Donnie Yen reprising his role as Caine, the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4. Although there is no official diary yet, the film is expected to be launched after the event Chapter 4 and improve explore Caine’s story as he navigates life after the High Table.

While Reeves and Sahelski currently have no plans for a fifth John Wick movie, according to Business Insider, they should return to Wick-verse as executive producers for the upcoming sequel to the TV series titled John Wick: Under the High Table. The series will introduce new characters who strive to build their reputation in the underworld, while some of the franchise’s familiar faces stay true to tradition.

Sahelski also confirmed that there will be an anime style John Wick series, telling Playlist in November 2023: “To create all the cool stories that anime can achieve better than we could and a TV show to expand our world, we’re still going to find our fix, you know what I mean? Us too” and I’m going to have a good time.”
