When choosing a movie to watch during the holidays, Grinch is the name that always comes to mind — but which version of the classic Christmas fairy tale should you choose? Inspired by the 1957 book by Dr. Seuss. How the Grinch Stole Christmasall three cinematic films bring their own charm to the story.

The first — and shortest — of the three versions aired on the CBS network as a TV special in 1966 under the title How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Two more variants followed: a feature film directed by Jim Carrey How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2000 and an animated film Grinch in 2018

All the films follow the Grinch, a bright green cynic, as he and his dog Max embark on a mission to destroy the Christmas season for the citizens of Whoville. Cindy Lou Who, young Who, believes the Grinch may have some goodness in his heart and helps him learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Taylor Momsen, who played Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), shared with PEOPLE 2020, “I think people love Grinch simply because the heart of the story is so sweet and so touching and has such a good message.”

The first and shortest feature film to bring a Dr. Seuss book to life appeared in 1966 and featured the infamous song “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. Narrated by Boris Karloff, this first version of the Grinch sparked the holiday icon’s popularity.

The feature version was created 34 years after the 1966 special was presented. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Carrey as the Grinch, this adaptation became an instant hit. How the Grinch Stole Christmas brings a darker feel compared to the original animation thanks to the bleak setting of the Grinch’s cave on Mount Crumpit and the creepy prosthetics and makeup applied to Carrey, which took about two and a half hours for each day of filming, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Momsen was 7 years old when she played Cindy Lou Who and was one of the few characters in the film who didn’t have the infamous nose of the Who citizen. Speaking to PEOPLE in 2020, she shared: “I was too young to wear braces so they put the line in the movie, ‘She hasn’t even grown into a nose yet,’ so they just put a lot of blush on my nose. ”

This performance also dives deeper into the Grinch’s reasoning for his dislike of the Christmas season, including his time in an orphanage and his negative experience in elementary school with his fellow Whos.

Despite being the villain of the feature film, the Grinch is hard to hate in the 2018 film. Bright and friendly animations bring an overall tone of joy to the film. Best known for Tyler, the Creator’s version of “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” the song retains the familiar sound of Ravenscroft’s original tune, but adds a fun twist synonymous with the lightheartedness of the film and modern animation. Benedict Cumberbatch and Cameron Seely voice the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who, while Kenan Thompson’s film about Bricklebaum, especially the cheerful Who, adds a comedic element to the film. Rashida Jones, Pharrell Williams and Angela Lansbury also star.
