The National Parade (NDP) is an annual event in Singapore held on 9 August to celebrate the country’s independence. It is the main public celebration of National Day and includes a parade featuring contingents from the Singapore Armed Forces, the Ministry of Home Affairs, local institutions and community groups. The parade is followed by a cultural presentation with music, dance and spectacular fireworks.
The first NDP was held on 9 August 1966, marking the anniversary of Singapore’s independence from Malaysia. Since then, it has been held every year in honor of this significant milestone in national history. Over the years, the parade has been held at various locations, including the Padang, the former national stadium, and in a decentralized format across the country to encourage wider public participation.
Since 1984, the Padang has become a regular venue for the parade, hosting it initially every three years and later every five years since 1995, coinciding with anniversaries of national importance. The event was occasionally hosted by the National Stadium when the Padang was not selected.
When the National Stadium closed in 2007, The Float @ Marina Bay, a temporary floating venue, took its place in rotation. The float was designed to hold events of national importance while the new National Stadium was under construction. After the completion of the new stadium, it only hosted the parade once in 2016, with The Float designated as the primary venue.
Currently, The Float is undergoing redevelopment and will be transformed into a permanent venue known as NS Square. The Padang is expected to host the National Day Parade in 2023. The NDP remains a cherished tradition that brings Singaporeans together to celebrate the achievements and unity of their nation.
