Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner in your own home or attending a feast elsewhere, chances are you’ve forgotten that little something that makes you run out to grab it…only to find out the store is closed for the holiday.

Thanksgiving gives many workers a break before the official start of the holiday shopping season, especially before Black Friday which takes place the next day when the clock strikes midnight on November 24th.

The trend of US retailers and wholesalers putting their employees first and closing their businesses for the holiday began in 2020, since Walmart made the decision to close stores at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Target has followed suit in an attempt to cut down on crowds and make shopping less stressful for its customers. The company continued to close stores the following year and made the decision to permanently close on Thanksgiving.

This year, for the first time in company history, Walgreens announced that all of its stores and pharmacies will be closed on Thanksgiving “so team members can spend time with their loved ones,” a spokesperson told PEOPLE. However, Walgreen’s 24-hour locations will remain open “to meet the healthcare needs of customers and patients.”
