Whitey Bulger is a notorious American organized crime mastermind, who was the head of the Winter Hill Gang. His gang operated in the Winter Hill neighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts, New England, United Kingdom.

Bulger died on October 30, 2018 at the US Penitentiary, Hazelton, West Virginia. Camp inmates beat him to death while he was in a wheelchair, shortly after he arrived there.
They beat him so mercilessly that he could not recognize himself. It was later revealed that the cause of his death was blunt force trauma.
Whitey Bulger’s killers arrested
On August 18, 2022, three inmates were found involved in Bulger’s murder, Fotios Geas (age 55), Paul J. DeCologero (age 48), and Sean McKinnon (age 36).
The three are accused of conspiring to commit aggravated murder. Geas and DeCologero are accused of punching Bulger multiple times in the head, leading to his death.

Bulger was born on September 3, 1929 as James Joseph Bulger Jr., in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He died at the age of 89. He was an organized crime boss and the head of the Winter Hill gang.

In the 1960s, Bulger dated waitress and model Lindsey Cyr. She later became his common-law wife. They stayed together for more than 12 years.
He was in a relationship with one of his co-workers named Catherine Greig who was 22 years his junior. She was found guilty of hiding Bulger and committing identity fraud. She was sentenced in June 2012 to 8 years in federal prison. She was also sentenced to 21 months in prison for contempt of court. It was finally released in July 2020.

Bulger was arrested in 2011 after a 16-year manhunt. He was charged with nineteen murders following the testimony of Kevin Weeks and other criminal associates.
He is also charged with conspiracy to murder, extortion, distribution of narcotics and conspiracy to launder money, including racketeering.
He was sentenced to two life terms after being found guilty of 11 murders, with five years suspended. He was forfeited $25.2 million and asked to forfeit $19.5 million in restitution to his victims, under the restitution law.

A Hollywood movie called “Black Mass” was released in 2015 based on Bulger’s life. The main character was played by the famous actor Johnny Depp, and the film was successful at the box office. In 2014, a documentary based on the Bulger trials was released, entitled “Whitey: The United States of America v. James J. Bulger.”
