Gilbert Arenas is a former American professional basketball player. He was born out of wedlock to his parents, Gilbert Sr. and Mary Robinson. The couple’s relationship did not work out as they expected, just as they believed that the birth of their son would mark a new beginning in their lives. His parents divorced when he was six months old.
Gilbert then moved with his mother to his grandparents’ home in Florida. Later, when he was three years old, his father brought him to live with him, drastically changing his life. Gilbert Arenas played for four different NBA clubs over the course of a decade, winning several trophies and accolades. He was at the height of his career with the Washington Wizards, averaging more than 20.0 points per game in numerous seasons.
Gilbert received several individual accolades during his NBA career, including MVP and three-time All-Star, but never won a ring. In 2012, he joined the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). After the failure of his attempts to return to the NBA, the athlete announced his retirement in 2013. The former athlete is now the co-host of Fubo Sports Network’s The No Chill Podcast. In addition, he talks about basketball with his guests on his YouTube channel Gil’s Arena.
Parents of Gilbert Arenas: Gilbert Arenas Sr. and Mary Robinson.
Gilbert Arenas was born on January 6, 1982 in Tampa, Florida to Gilbert Arenas Sr. and his girlfriend Mary Robinson. Gilbert Sr., who is originally from Tampa, met Mary while studying at the University of Miami. They soon fell in love, and Gilbert was born when Mary was still a teenager. Gilbert grew up in Miami with his mother and her family until he was three when his father was still in college and unemployed. Gilbert Sr. finally gained custody of his son when Mary was unable to care for him due to drug use.
Gilbert’s life changed drastically when he moved home with his father. Gilbert Sr. was an athlete who played baseball and football in college. As a result, he instilled in his child a similar determination. Gilbert Jr., on the other hand, was more interested in basketball than any other sport. When his father moved to Los Angeles a few years later to pursue an acting career, he took his child with him. Gilbert played basketball for his high school team at Ulysses S. Grant High School in California.
Gilbert Arenas wanted to play in the NBA when he was twelve years old. Knowing of his son’s ambitions, his father spent time developing his talents and accompanied him to the academy to practice the game. Gilbert is still grateful to his father for not leaving him in foster care and raising him independently despite various challenges.
Gilbert met his mother only once, when he was 20 years old
As previously reported, the former basketball star divorced his mother when he was three years old, and his father raised him alone. Often as a child he wished his mother would appear to him, but she never did. Mary Robinson found her son almost eighteen years later when he was in Miami for a Golden State Warriors game in his second NBA season.
Gilbert saw her briefly after the match, but was wary at first because he had no idea who she was. However, after meeting her, he realized that she was his biological mother, but was unsure how to feel about it. After their conversation, she gave him her phone number, but he did not answer her. Mary Robinson died on March 13, 2010 at the age of 46, never seeing her son again.
