He transferred to the University of Southern California (USC) after playing 59 games for Memphis. Ellis was named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 during his freshman year at USC. Boogie Ellis is the son of Rejean Tremaine Ellis and Rowiene Simpson.

Boogie Ellis was born on December 12, 2000 to a family of mixed origins, including his parents, Rejean Tremaine Ellis and Rowiena Simpson (she is of mixed black and Filipino ancestry). As a child, Ellis was raised with four siblings. His grandmother, Corazon Simpson, is from Caloocan, so she has deep family ties to the Philippines.
