Artie Lange was born in Livingston, New Jersey, the son of Arthur Lange (father), a general contractor of television antennas, and Judy Lange. His father was of German and Native American descent, and his mother was of Italian descent, so his family was multi-ethnic.
Artie has a fashion designer sister named Stacey Lange. Because of his poor grades, he was forced to attend summer school at Union High School. He knew he could do better, but he was still proud of what he had accomplished.
He wanted to be a professional baseball player when he was younger, but as he grew older, he developed a passion for making people laugh. That’s when he decided to become a stand-up comedian. Lange was arrested at the age of 18 for attempting to rob a bank. As part of his probation, he spent four months at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. He later went to Setton University in South Orange, New Jersey.
In October 1985, Lange’s father was involved in an accident that left him, quadriplegic, forever altering his family life. Lange’s mother began working as a secretary, and Lange began installing antennas like his father. His father, however, died in 1990.

Artie Lange began his comedy career in New York City, performing in small venues and clubs. In 1987, he made his stand-up comedy debut in a show. It was titled “Improve in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen.” “He took a job as a longshoreman at pork Newark to support his family.”
He quit his job and began driving taxis to help pay his tuition at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Lange was cast in a dinner theater play in Manhattan and visited numerous restaurants and catering halls in New Jersey.
