Bill Nelson was born in Miami, Florida on September 29, 1942. His parents, Nannie Merle and Clarence William Nelson raised him as their only child. He comes from English, Scottish, Irish and Danish ancestors. He lost his father when he was 14 years old because he died of a heart attack, and he lost his mother when he was 24 years old. Bill Nelson grew up in Melbourne, Florida and attended Melbourne High School.
He was baptized by immersion in the Baptist church. He became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in 2005. It is located in Orlando. He went to the University of Florida before transferring to Yale, where he was a member of the Book and the Serpent secret society. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia.

Bill Nelson was a United States Senator for nearly two decades. His mandate began in 2001, and he will leave in 2019. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1972 to 1978 and then in the United States House of Representatives from 1979 to 1991. When he served as a payload specialist on Space Shuttle Colombia in 1986, he became the second sitting member of Congress to fly in space.
