He started his career in high school when he was a member of the school band. He later became the lead singer of the band DREVE, which was signed to Atlantic Records. At that point he was forced to leave the band and joined Shinedown. He traveled to Los Angeles to record with Desmond Child. When he returned to Knoxville, Atlantic Records offered him a development deal.
He moved to Jacksonville in 2001 and started working on this project. Brad Stewart, the bass player, was the first member he hired. Both started recording demos in a local studio. After that they were joined by drummer Barry Kerch and their project progressed. Their material was licensed by Atlantic Records and their debut album, LEAVE A WHISPER, was released on May 27, 2003. After that, he released five more albums as part of Shinedown, including Amaryllis, The Sound of Madness, Us and Them and Attention.
