Career of Clarence Carter

Clarence Carter’s professional music career began when he met Calvin Scott, a friend. As Clarence & Calvin, they sang on the Fairlane label to release “I Wanna Dance But I Don’t Know How”. After the release of I Don’t Know in 1962, the two joined Duke Records. As a result, they rebranded as C & C Boys and signed to a record label, releasing four singles.

At Rick Hall’s FAME studio in Muscle Shoals, the duo recorded the song “Step by Step” in 1965. As a result, it was released on Atco, which is owned by Atlantic Records, although it failed to chart.

In Birmingham, Alabama, the duo regularly performed in bars in 1966. Scott was later seriously injured in a car accident. Carter also continued to record on the Fame label as a solo artist. In 1967, he released the song “Tell Daddy”, which reached number 35 on the Billboard R&B chart. Carter is also credited as the writer of Etta James’ response album, Tell Mama. Then, starting with “Slip Away,” he launched a string of R&B and mainstream smash hits. As a result, it has been called “a superior ballad about infidelity that accentuates its pain”. The Recording Industry Association of America certified his singles as gold before he signed with Atlantic.
