Biography of Dara Khosrowshahi
Dara Khosrowshahi was raised in a wealthy family and was born in Iran. Asghar Khosrowshahi is his father and Lili Khosrowshahi is his mother. Of his three siblings, he is the youngest. He comes from a family of entrepreneurs who founded the company Alborz Investment, a multinational corporation dealing in trade, food distribution, pharmaceutical products, chemicals and other services.
Dara’s father had to travel to Iran in 1982 when he was 13 to take care of his grandfather. He was not allowed to leave the nation for six years. Therefore, Dara went through puberty without him.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Tarrytown’s Hackley School in 1987. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Brown University in 1991.

Dara Khosrowshahi has always aspired to succeed in business and follow in his father’s footsteps. He accepted a position as an analyst at Allen & Company, an investment bank, in 1991. He decided to leave the company in 1998 and work for “Barry Diller”, one of his former bank clients. He was elected to the position of Senior Vice President, in charge of strategic planning. After the promotion, he was appointed the president of that company, and eventually became the chief financial officer of the company “IAC” owned by Diller.
IAC was acquired by Expedia in 2001. Dara was promoted to CEO of Expedia in August 2005. As part of a long-term employment deal that calls for Dara to stay with the company until 2020, he received $90 million from Expedia in 2015, a decade after he started working there.
He was considered one of the highest paid CEOs in the United States in 2016. Expedia expanded its operations to more than sixty countries during his time there. In addition, the company has acquired small businesses including Orbitz, HomeAway and Travelocity.
In August 2017, he was appointed Uber’s CEO (Chief Executing Officer). He oversaw Uber’s May 2019 IPO (initial public offering).
