After five tough auditions, American Idol made it to the Hollywood Week rotation, where selected contestants performed solo and in pairs under various obstacles. The show will air on ABC on Sunday, April 2 at 8:00 PM ET. Dawson Wayne is a singer-songwriter who passed the off-camera audition of American Idol and will be participating in Hollywood Week.
Last August, he auditioned for Zoom’s popular music challenge. Wayne traveled to Nashville to perform live in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. Dawson was one of 150 contestants agreed by all three judges and will now compete for a spot in the top 24 singers.

American Idol contestant Dawson Wayne has won a $4,000 scholarship.
Dawson Wayne, real name Dawson Rice, is a resident of Katy, Texas and an alumnus of Reagan High School. He is the pit conductor and percussionist of his school’s military band. Dawson has performed on stage with the Foundations and Chamber Choir as Hello Dolly and Titanic. For his work on the Titanic, he received a $4,000 scholarship at the Joci Prize. Wayne is currently attending Brigham Young University in Hawaii and plans to move to Utah.
He also wants to attend BYU in Provo, and he released his solo record, With All My Heart (written by someone else), last October as part of the Church’s annual student album Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ. Discussing her record, the American Idol contestant revealed:
“It was the best thing I’ve ever done; I’ve always loved music and wanted to make it a career, so stepping into this huge recording studio with this producer (Mitch Davis) who is so talented, changed my life.”
Dawson’s goal in life is to “look at the audience and give them a good performance” that they can feel and that make them smile. Dawson released his first original single, More Me, Lonely, on the night of his Hollywood Week show. The music Wayne played during the audition wasn’t clear, but the judges liked it. Katy Perry called him an “emerging artist” and judge Richie added:
“I like where your voice comes from – deep down, from a spiritual place.”
Jana Rice, Wayne’s mother, revealed that Dawson may seem calm on the surface, but his ambition is to compete on American Idol. Jana wasn’t in Hollywood at the time of Wayne’s performance, so this would be the first time she’d seen him act on television with other people.
